Upper Arlington, Ohio
Finding fish aftercare in Upper Arlington
Upper Arlington households often stay with one vet practice for many years, and plenty of families simply arrange aftercare through that clinic. That is convenient, but an independent provider may charge differently for the same thing. Ask each about solo versus shared cremation, whether a nose or paw print comes included, and the usual wait before ashes can be picked up.
Upper Arlington, about 6 miles northwest of downtown Columbus, was laid out in the 1910s as a planned suburb with curving streets and generous lots, and it remains almost entirely residential. Many homes are large, older and set back from the street behind long front paths, so tell a provider whether a side door or the garage is the easier way in. Ohio State's campus is only minutes east.
Around Upper Arlington, plenty of families keep fish in garden ponds, stock tanks or a farm pond, and losses often happen in summer or right after the ice melts. If a fish dies in a pond that also serves livestock or feeds a creek, lift it out quickly and don't bury it near the water's edge. A burial further up the garden, or a cremation, keeps anything that caused the death away from the other fish.
With roughly 35,893 residents, Upper Arlington is the 38th-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. Columbus, roughly 6 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Upper Arlington run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Hilliard (5 miles), Columbus (6 miles, a larger centre) and Dublin (7 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

How Ohio thinks about cremation
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Ohio, at about 59.1%[1], but burial traditions still run deep. You'll see both among fish keepers. A small garden grave with a stone is a perfectly good goodbye for a tank fish, and many families choose it. Cremation tends to come up for larger pond fish, or when you rent, have no garden or expect to move house.
We take the Ohio rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Upper Arlington, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
When the weather sets the pace in Upper Arlington
Cold water hides problems in Upper Arlington. Fish in an iced-over pond barely eat and their immune systems slow right down, so an infection picked up in autumn may only show itself in spring. If fish die as the water warms after January, February, March and December, a vet who treats fish can learn far more from a fresh, chilled body than a frozen one. Decide before you bag the fish: fridge if you want answers, freezer if you just need time.
Frozen ground is the practical problem for a fish that dies in a Upper Arlington winter. With lows below freezing for 4 months of the year, a garden burial may simply not be possible until spring. That's fine. Seal your fish in a bag, label it and keep it in the freezer. Many families find it comforting to wait and bury their fish when they're planting the garden.

Paying for a fish's goodbye in Upper Arlington
By our estimate, private cremation costs about twice as much as communal[5] across the markets we track, and for a fish that gap deserves a moment's thought. The extra pays for your own fish's ashes to come back to you. With a koi, that buys a few ounces for a small urn. With a neon tetra, it may buy very little. Ask any Upper Arlington provider what they would return, then decide whether the difference is worth it. The cost calculator lays out both routes side by side.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Ohio: Ohio costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

The legal side of losing a fish in Ohio
A loss sometimes leads families to give up fish keeping altogether. If you're rehoming the fish that are left, offer them to a fish store, a club or another keeper; don't be tempted to free them in a local stream or lake, however healthy the water looks. Escaped pet fish spread parasites and compete with native species. For the fish you've lost, the local rules in Ohio are below.

A calm plan for a fish's aftercare
- Net your fish out gently and lay it on a soft cloth, giving yourself a moment.
- Freeze it the same day, wrapped and sealed in a bag. Once frozen, a fish will keep for weeks, and there's no more rush.
- Work out its size: a provider will want the length from nose to tail fork and an approximate weight, so take both now.
- Tell the family, children included, plainly and truthfully. Slipping in a lookalike rarely ends well.
- Compare two options, such as private cremation with the ashes in a small urn against burying your fish beneath something newly planted.
- Book your choice and find out how they keep track of your fish from hand-over to the day it comes back.

Questions people ask
How does Upper Arlington's weather affect fish aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Upper Arlington, with average highs around 86°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Where are the providers that serve Upper Arlington actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Columbus, about 6 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Upper Arlington and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is cremation common in Ohio?
For people, yes: about 59.1%[1] of Ohio deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Upper Arlington follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Upper Arlington?
Usually yes. Hilliard is about 5 miles away, Columbus is about 6 miles away and Dublin is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How much ash does a fish leave after cremation?
Cremated remains usually weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, and fish tend toward the low end because they're mostly water with fine bones. A large koi might return a few ounces, enough for a small urn. A pond goldfish may leave a keepsake vial's worth. A small tank fish may leave nothing you could collect separately.
What should I do with the other fish after one dies?
Remove the dead fish quickly, then test the water for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature. Check the filter, pump and heater. If readings are off, do a partial water change and hold off feeding for a day. Watch the others closely for a week. If more fish look unwell, a vet who sees fish can examine a freshly chilled body.
