Maple Heights, Ohio
What happens when a pet fish dies in Maple Heights
Maple Heights, an older suburb roughly 9 miles southeast of downtown Cleveland, is laid out in tight rows of bungalows and postwar colonials on slim parcels, often with a one-car garage at the rear. Pickup from a house like this is rarely complicated, but drivers appreciate knowing whether to come to the side door or the front, and whether the curb out front is usually lined with parked cars.
Because backyards in Maple Heights are small and neighbors sit close, a grave at home rarely works, so most households here choose cremation. The urn frequently ends up on a bookcase or mantel near a snapshot, and some owners add a potted rosebush or a garden stone beside the back step. In a modest house, a memorial takes very little room.
Families near Maple Heights sometimes lose several pond fish at once after a storm, a power cut to the pump or a hot, still night. It's upsetting to find, and the first job is the survivors: remove the dead fish, get air moving in the water and test it. Once that's done, you can freeze the fish you lost and decide calmly whether they'll be buried together, cremated communally or cremated individually.
Maple Heights is home to about 22,902 people, the 74th-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. Cleveland, roughly 9 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Maple Heights run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Garfield Heights (2 miles), Shaker Heights (5 miles) and Solon (7 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Maple Heights routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

How Ohio thinks about cremation
Cremation now covers some 59.1%[1] of deaths in Ohio, and that steady rise has gone hand in hand with pets being treated as family. Fish are part of the shift. Koi typically live 30-40 years[5], according to the Japan Nishikigoi Promotion Association, so a pond fish can outlast a mortgage and watch children grow up. Choosing a proper cremation for a fish like that is no stranger than doing it for a dog.
That Ohio rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Maple Heights only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, ice and your pond in Maple Heights
If you find a fish frozen into the ice in Maple Heights, don't hammer the surface to get it out; many keepers avoid that because the shock can stress the fish still living below. Pour hot water on a spot or let a de-icer open a hole, and lift the fish out once it's free. If a fish is stuck deep in thick ice, it may be kinder to the others to wait for a thaw.
Cold months in Maple Heights (January, February, March and December) mean that power cuts matter. A pond pump or tank heater that fails during a freeze can kill fish within hours. If it happens and you lose fish, keep them sealed in the freezer, or in a cold garage if the freezer is out too, while you get things running again. Aftercare can wait days or weeks without any problem.

Why a small fish still has a minimum price
Where a Maple Heights provider offers water cremation, ask for both of its versions. By our estimate, private aquamation runs about two and a half times the price of communal aquamation at the same provider[6]. The process uses roughly the water of 1–3 pet baths[7], according to the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance, which appeals to many people saying goodbye to a water animal. What comes back is a soft white powder instead of grey ash, and the national price bands appear in the table below.

Before you bury, scatter or rehome in Ohio
Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places. Often there's no licence written for them at all, and any inspection covers the equipment rather than how pets are handled. That puts the questions in your hands: ask in writing how a small body is labeled from drop-off to return and whether the cremation is truly individual. Rules on burial and scattering in Ohio follow.

A calm plan for a fish's aftercare
- Make sure. Watch the gills and fins for a full minute. A fish lying still on the bottom can be chilled, stunned or very weak rather than gone.
- Lift your fish out with a net once you're certain; left in the tank, it will start to spoil the water for the rest.
- Seal it in a bag or tub, press the air out and freeze it. If you'd like a vet to look for the cause of death, keep it cold in the fridge rather than frozen.
- Test the water the same day for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature, and watch the remaining fish closely.
- Decide by size. Private cremation makes sense for a koi or big goldfish; a small tank fish is usually better buried, potted under a plant or cremated communally.
- Call a provider and ask what they'd return once they know how long and heavy it is, then have the total put in writing.
Keeping your fish part of the family story
Winter here brings January lows near 22F and cold that lasts into March, so a basement corner or detached garage stays chilly enough to keep your companion for a short while. Summer is harder, since afternoons touch the mid 80s and the air turns heavy. Rest your companion on a bath sheet laid over bags of ice, pull the blinds, and hope to have collection done before nightfall.

Questions people ask
How do Ohio attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Ohio human cremation rate at about 59.1%[1]. We show it on the Maple Heights page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Maple Heights?
Usually yes. Garfield Heights is about 2 miles away, Shaker Heights is about 5 miles away and Solon is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Maple Heights actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Cleveland, about 9 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Maple Heights and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Maple Heights?
January, February, March and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 84°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Is there free support for grieving a pet in Ohio?
Yes. Veterinary students trained by grief counselors answer the free Cornell Pet Loss Support Hotline, and Tufts University runs a free Pet Loss Support Helpline on weekday evenings. Both take calls from anywhere in the US. A long-lived koi or a child's first goldfish is a real loss, and they'll treat it as one.
Does Ohio regulate pet crematories?
Only nine US states have laws written specifically for pet crematories, and only two require written documentation for consumers. Elsewhere, it's up to you to ask. For a fish, ask in writing whether the cremation is private, communal or partitioned, how your fish is identified and what will be returned for its size.
