Ferguson, Missouri
Who will cremate a fish in Ferguson?
Ferguson is an older inner-ring suburb in north St. Louis County, about 10 miles from downtown and just a few minutes from Lambert airport. Its streets of brick bungalows and modest two-story houses mean small yards rather than acreage. Pet cremation services here are based around the wider county, so when you phone one, ask plainly whether they collect from a residence, what the trip adds, and what the full price comes to.
Ferguson summers bring July highs around 90F and heavy humidity, so move your pet's body to the coolest part of the home within an hour or so: a basement slab or tile floor, a blanket underneath, frozen packs covered with a dish towel. With lows in the mid-20s and freezing weather from December into February, digging in a small city yard is often not realistic until the spring thaw.
In a smaller place like Ferguson, fish aftercare usually goes through the local vet, who sends small animals to a crematory in a larger city such as St. Louis. Some vets have a weekly collection, so your fish may wait a few days in their freezer. That's fine: a fish frozen promptly keeps well. Ask the vet whether their crematory accepts fish and what, if anything, comes back for a fish of your size.
Ferguson is home to about 17,953 people, the 42nd-largest of the 43 Missouri communities we cover. St. Louis, roughly 10 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Ferguson run from there.
Families in Ferguson often end up using a provider from Florissant (4 miles, a larger centre), University City (6 miles) and Hazelwood (6 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

What local funeral customs suggest for a pet fish
In Missouri, about 59.8%[1] of people are cremated. That middle ground means most people are comfortable with cremation without it being automatic. For a fish, that's a helpful place to be: nobody expects a particular choice, and providers are used to hearing different requests. Decide by size. Larger koi and goldfish suit cremation; the smallest fish often suit a burial, a planter or a communal cremation.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Missouri figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Ferguson tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
What the seasons mean for fish in Ferguson
In Ferguson, the pond you might lose a fish from in July is the same one that ices over in January, February and December, and the right aftercare shifts with the season. A summer loss calls for speed: out of the water and into the freezer before the heat does its work. A winter loss calls for patience, because the fish can stay frozen until the ground opens up. Plan the goodbye around the season you're in, not around a deadline.
Ferguson gets both extremes: highs around 90°F in July and lows at or below freezing in January, February and December. Pond fish face oxygen crashes on hot, still summer nights and ice cover in winter. In summer, act fast: remove a dead fish quickly and get air moving. In winter, you have time, but frozen ground can rule out a garden burial until spring.

Why a small fish still has a minimum price
Expect to pay the provider's small-pet minimum for your fish in Ferguson. PetMD says US communal cremation starts from about $50[5], and Embrace Pet Insurance gives wider national ranges for private cremation and aquamation, shown below. Before you pay for a private cremation, ask how much ash the provider expects to return. Cremated remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], and a fish can come in at the low end of that.

Rules worth knowing in Missouri
Fish aftercare touches fewer rules than a dog or horse, but a few are worth knowing. Burying on rented land needs the owner's agreement. Scattering ashes into open water can need permission from whoever manages it. And releasing live fish, or pouring out a pond, is illegal in many places because of invasive species. Here's the local picture for Missouri.

The rules that apply across Missouri (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Missouri page. Ferguson may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
The first day after a fish dies
- Remove the fish from the pond or tank promptly, especially in warm weather.
- Count your stock and look for a cause: a visiting heron, a pump that stopped, a sultry airless night or a water quality crash.
- Fix the water first: add aeration, do a partial water change if readings are off and hold off feeding for a day.
- Freeze the fish you lost, each one in its own sealed bag if you want them cremated separately.
- Decide whether you want ashes back. If not, communal cremation or a burial well away from the pond is simple and kind.
- Ask for a written quote with collection, the cremation itself and the container itemized.
- Mark the loss with a stone by the pond, a water plant or a note in your fish log.
Memorials that suit a fish
January-Wabash Park, with its small lake and loop path, is where plenty of Ferguson residents take their animals outdoors on mild afternoons. Scattering ashes there isn't appropriate, but sitting on a bench by the water can be a calm place to decide what comes next. For the compact lots in town, a flat stone near the front steps or a container garden often feels right.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to St. Louis to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in St. Louis (roughly 10 miles from Ferguson) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do Missouri attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Missouri human cremation rate at about 59.8%[1]. We show it on the Ferguson page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How does Ferguson's weather affect fish aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Ferguson, with average highs around 90°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Ferguson?
Usually yes. Florissant is about 4 miles away, University City is about 6 miles away and Hazelwood is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I bury a fish when the ground is frozen?
Usually not, and there's no need to try. Keep your fish sealed and labeled in the freezer until spring. It won't come to any harm. Many families find it comforting to wait and plant something at the same time. Cremation is also an option if you'd rather not wait.
My fish jumped out of the tank. Could it still be alive?
Possibly, if it hasn't been out long. Many fish survive a few minutes on the floor. Slip it back into the aquarium straight away and watch the gills. If they move, keep the lights low and the water calm. If there's no movement after several minutes, the fish has probably died. Handle it with a damp cloth, fit a tight lid to protect the others and freeze the body while you decide.
