Apple Valley, Minnesota
Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Apple Valley picture
Rabbits and other small mammals are popular family pets here, and some live in outdoor hutches. If a rabbit dies outside in winter, bring the body in to a garage or cool room rather than leaving it where predators can reach it. January nights near 9F slow decay; on hot summer afternoons, get the body somewhere cool quickly and call a provider the same day.
Apple Valley residents have memories on the eastern trails of Lebanon Hills, around Farquar Lake, or in the neighborhood parks tucked between the subdivisions. City and county parkland each come with their own policies on ashes, so ask the right office first. A shady spot in your own yard or a container of perennials on the patio needs no one's permission.
For a child in Apple Valley, a goldfish won at a county fair or a betta from the pet aisle is often their first pet. When it dies, a small ceremony in the garden with a painted stone can mean more than any cremation. If your child wants to keep something, some crematories return a token vial and certificate even for a very small fish, but ask what's inside before you pay for it.

What local funeral customs suggest for a pet fish
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Minnesota, at about 68.5%[1], but burial traditions still run deep. You'll see both among fish keepers. A small garden grave with a stone is a perfectly good goodbye for a tank fish, and many families choose it. Cremation tends to come up for larger pond fish, or when you rent, have no garden or expect to move house.

Heat, ice and your pond in Apple Valley
Spring clean-outs are when many Apple Valley pond owners find out how winter went. If you lose fish as the water warms, test it straight away: rotting leaves and a winter's worth of waste can spike ammonia just as fish start feeding again. Freeze any fish you lose until the water is stable, then decide on cremation or a burial in the newly thawed ground.
Cold months in Apple Valley (January, February, March, November and December) mean that power cuts matter. A pond pump or tank heater that fails during a freeze can kill fish within hours. If it happens and you lose fish, keep them sealed in the freezer, or in a cold garage if the freezer is out too, while you get things running again. Aftercare can wait days or weeks without any problem.

Fish cremation prices for Apple Valley families
Where an Apple Valley provider offers water cremation, ask for both of its versions. By our estimate, private aquamation runs about two and a half times the price of communal aquamation at the same provider[5]. The process uses roughly the water of 1–3 pet baths[6], according to the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance, which appeals to many people saying goodbye to a water animal. What comes back is a soft white powder instead of grey ash, and the national price bands appear in the table below.

What Minnesota allows for a pet fish
Rules about pets after death are set locally, and fish are usually covered by the same rules as other small pets. Garden burial is often allowed on land you own, with limits near wells and water. Scattering ashes directly into lakes and rivers may need permission. Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places, and some ban releasing goldfish outright.

A calm plan for a fish's aftercare
- If a sitter finds your fish dead while you're away, have them take it out carefully, wrap it in a paper towel and put it in the freezer in a labeled bag.
- Ask for a quick photo of the tank or pond and a note of anything unusual, such as a silent pump or cloudy water.
- Have them check the others and, if the water doesn't look right, turn any automatic feeder off.
- Make no aftercare decisions from a distance. Once frozen, your fish can wait for your return.
- When you're back, test the water yourself, then choose between burial and cremation calmly.
- Thank your sitter. Discovering a dead pet is hard on the person who finds it, whoever the fish belonged to.
Keeping a fish's memory close
Apple Valley grew up in the 1960s and after on open land in western Dakota County, about 16 miles south of Saint Paul, and most of it is still quiet residential streets of ramblers, split-levels and townhomes laid out around Cedar Avenue and Highway 77. Because it is mostly single-family housing with driveways, collection is usually straightforward. South metro services include the city; ask for an all-in written price.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Minnesota?
For people, yes: about 68.5%[1] of Minnesota deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Apple Valley follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Does the Apple Valley climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 83°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Where are the providers that serve Apple Valley actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Saint Paul, about 16 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Apple Valley and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Apple Valley?
Usually yes. Burnsville is about 4 miles away, Eagan is about 5 miles away and Lakeville is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
My fish jumped out of the tank. Could it still be alive?
Possibly, if it hasn't been out long. Many fish survive a few minutes on the floor. Slip it back into the aquarium straight away and watch the gills. If they move, keep the lights low and the water calm. If there's no movement after several minutes, the fish has probably died. Handle it with a damp cloth, fit a tight lid to protect the others and freeze the body while you decide.
What can I keep if my fish was too small to leave ashes?
Plenty. A framed photo, a painting or print of the fish, its favorite tank ornament, a plant grown over a garden burial or a painted stone all work. Some crematories offer a token vial with a certificate, though the contents may be mostly from the chamber. Ask what's inside before you pay, and choose whatever feels like your fish.
