When a fish you love dies in Novi

Novi, Michigan

Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Novi picture

Walled Lake borders Novi to the north, and Lakeshore Park on its shore is a popular summer spot. Public shoreline and parkland aren't places to scatter ashes without the city's permission. Many Novi subdivisions have homeowners associations, so check their rules before burying a small animal in the yard, or choose cremation and give the ashes a place inside the house.

Novi is a fast-growing Oakland County city about 25 miles from downtown Detroit, sitting where I-96, I-696 and M-5 converge. Much of its housing is recent: 1990s and 2000s subdivisions, townhouse communities, and apartments clustered near Twelve Oaks Mall and the Grand River Avenue corridor. Providers that cover western Oakland County drive to Novi routinely, and a couple of quotes compared side by side will show you the real price range.

For a child in Novi, a goldfish won at a county fair or a betta from the pet aisle is often their first pet. When it dies, a small ceremony in the garden with a painted stone can mean more than any cremation. If your child wants to keep something, some crematories return a token vial and certificate even for a very small fish, but ask what's inside before you pay for it.

Novi's population is around 67,319, the 17th-largest of the 63 Michigan communities we cover. Detroit, roughly 25 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Novi run from there.

For a second opinion on price, Farmington Hills (6 miles), Livonia (8 miles) and Southfield (12 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Novi routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Local attitudes to cremation

Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Michigan, at about 69.5%[1], but burial traditions still run deep. You'll see both among fish keepers. A small garden grave with a stone is a perfectly good goodbye for a tank fish, and many families choose it. Cremation tends to come up for larger pond fish, or when you rent, have no garden or expect to move house.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Michigan figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Novi tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Season by season: fish losses in Novi

Some Novi families choose cremation in winter precisely because the ground is frozen, then scatter or bury the ashes in spring. For a larger koi, that gives you a small urn to keep through the cold months and a chance to plan something by the pond once the ice has gone. For a small fish, the freezer and a spring burial usually make more sense.

Spring clean-outs are when many Novi pond owners find out how winter went. If you lose fish as the water warms, test it straight away: rotting leaves and a winter's worth of waste can spike ammonia just as fish start feeding again. Freeze any fish you lose until the water is stable, then decide on cremation or a burial in the newly thawed ground.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Novi

Budgeting for a koi or tank fish in Novi

Cost is a fair worry, even for a small pet. In one US survey of pet owners, 61%[5] said the cost of aftercare was a concern. The good news for fish keepers in Novi is that there are low-cost options: communal cremation through a vet, a garden or planter burial that costs next to nothing, or a private cremation only for the larger fish where ash is worth keeping.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Michigan: Michigan costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Local rules in Michigan

Some fish diseases are taken seriously by governments. Koi herpesvirus, for example, is reportable in a number of countries because it spreads between ponds and fisheries. If a vet suspects a notifiable disease, follow their instructions on disposal, which may mean cremation rather than burial. For everyday losses from age or water problems, the normal rules for Michigan, set out below, are all you need.

For Michigan's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Michigan guide. Local rules in Novi can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.

A calm plan for a fish's aftercare

  1. Make sure. Watch the gills and fins for a full minute. A fish lying still on the bottom can be chilled, stunned or very weak rather than gone.
  2. Lift your fish out with a net once you're certain; left in the tank, it will start to spoil the water for the rest.
  3. Seal it in a bag or tub, press the air out and freeze it. If you'd like a vet to look for the cause of death, keep it cold in the fridge rather than frozen.
  4. Test the water the same day. Check ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature, then keep a close eye on the fish that are left.
  5. Decide by size. A koi or large goldfish suits private cremation; a small tank fish often suits a burial, a planter or communal cremation.
  6. Call a provider and ask what they'd return once they know how long and heavy it is, then have the total put in writing.

Memorials that suit a fish

Novi's January nights can bottom out around 16F, while July afternoons climb into the mid-80s. On a summer day, lower the thermostat, lay your pet on a folded towel in the lowest, coolest room of the house, and tuck frozen gel packs along the back and belly. In winter an unheated garage helps for a few hours, but a midwinter thaw can warm it more than you'd expect.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Novi?

The closest communities we cover are Farmington Hills (about 6 miles), Livonia (about 8 miles) and Southfield (about 12 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Novi too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Is cremation common in Michigan?

For people, yes: about 69.5%[1] of Michigan deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Novi follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Does the Novi climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Where are the providers that serve Novi actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Detroit, about 25 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Novi and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Can a vet put my sick fish to sleep in Novi?

Yes. A vet with fish experience can end its suffering by adding an anesthetic overdose to its water, and the fish simply falls asleep. Vets advise against home methods such as freezing a live fish or flushing it. Transport it in its own water with a lid on, and raise aftercare during the same appointment, so the vet can arrange cremation or hand the body back to you for burial.

How long can I keep a dead fish in the freezer?

Sealed in a bag with the air pressed out and wrapped in a towel, a fish keeps for weeks or even months. That gives you time to find a provider or wait for a burial day. Label the bag clearly. If you want a vet to find out why your fish died, chill it in the fridge instead and call them quickly, because freezing damages the tissue.
