Kenner, Louisiana
What happens when a pet fish dies in Kenner
Kenner is a Jefferson Parish city about 12 miles west of downtown New Orleans, squeezed between Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River and home to the region's main airport. Housing is mostly single-story ranch homes, raised houses and apartments on a tight street grid. Aftercare providers from across the New Orleans area serve Kenner, so get a few quotes and check whether pickup is included in each.
Kenner is built on low ground protected by levees, and most yards are small, so cremation is the usual choice here. The Laketown lakefront and the old Rivertown district near the Mississippi are favorite places for fresh air, and some families keep a portion of ashes to remember a pet there after checking what's permitted. Most keep the urn at home, somewhere they pass each day.
In a town the size of Kenner, many families simply bury a small fish in the garden, and there's nothing wrong with that. Cremation tends to come up for larger or older fish: a koi that has been in the family for years, a big goldfish that outgrew three tanks, or a fish that belonged to someone who has since passed on. For those, the drive to a crematory near New Orleans can be worth it.
With roughly 65,136 residents, Kenner is the 7th-largest of the 17 Louisiana communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is New Orleans, about 12 miles (19 km) away, which is where some providers serving Kenner are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for New Orleans (12 miles, a larger centre), Slidell (34 miles) and St. George (52 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

How Louisiana thinks about cremation
In Louisiana, about 46.4%[1] of people are cremated, so it's still something of a minority choice. That can mean your vet sends small animals some distance to a crematory. For a fish, the distance hardly matters if it's frozen promptly. What matters more is an honest conversation about size: a large koi leaves enough ash for an urn, while a tetra or guppy may leave nothing separate.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Louisiana figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Kenner tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Heat, ice and your pond in Kenner
In the hottest months (May, June, July, August and September), a dead fish breaks down fast, in the water and out of it. Net it out within the hour if you can, because decay releases ammonia that can harm the fish still living in the pond or tank. Seal it in a bag, press the air out and freeze it. Never leave a fish in a hot car on the way to a vet or crematory; use a cooler with ice packs.
In Kenner's long warm season, fish keep eating and growing for most of the year, which is good for them but means pond water needs close watching. If a fish dies without an obvious cause in the hotter months, take a water sample to a fish store or test it yourself the same day. Knowing whether oxygen, ammonia or temperature was to blame can save the others.

Why a small fish still has a minimum price
In the US, almost every fish falls into the smallest weight band on a cremation price list. CareCredit's guide puts pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 for communal cremation and $100 to $175 for private[5]. That minimum exists because running the chamber costs much the same for a goldfish as for a small dog. Home collection, a decorative urn and a glass keepsake all add to the total, so ask any Kenner provider for a written figure.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Louisiana: Louisiana costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Louisiana allows for a pet fish
If you rent, your lease matters more than any law. Most tenancy agreements don't mention pet burials, but a landlord or homeowners' association can still object to a grave in a shared garden. A planter on your own balcony or patio avoids the question, as does cremation. Pond fish in a rented garden raise one more point: ask before draining or filling in a pond when you move out. The notes below cover what Louisiana allows.
To find your county or city office in Louisiana, start with the official Louisiana local government directory.
The Louisiana page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Kenner's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
A checklist for Kenner fish keepers
- If your child's fish dies while they're at school, leave it where it is or chill it, and tell them honestly when they get home.
- Skip the secret replacement. Most children spot the difference, and finding out later hurts more than hearing the truth now.
- Let them see the fish if they want to, resting in a soft cloth, and give plain, simple answers to whatever they ask.
- Offer two or three choices for how to say goodbye: a windowsill flowerpot, a place in the garden or a little box they can hold on to.
- Set a time for the goodbye, so they can make a card, pick a stone or choose words to say.
- Leave the tank empty for a while and hold off on new-fish talk unless your child brings it up first.
Small memorials for a small life in Kenner
Kenner's July highs near 91 degrees and damp Gulf air make fast cooling important, and with January lows around 46 there's no real cold season to buy time. Place your pet on a towel on a tile floor under an air-conditioning vent, keep bagged ice in cloth nearby, and ask for same-day collection. From June to November, keep in mind that a hurricane can interrupt services for days.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Louisiana?
For people, yes: about 46.4%[1] of Louisiana deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Kenner follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to New Orleans to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in New Orleans (roughly 12 miles from Kenner) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Kenner?
Usually yes. New Orleans is about 12 miles away, Slidell is about 34 miles away and St. George is about 52 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How does Kenner's weather affect fish aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Kenner, with average highs around 91°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Can I bury a fish on a relative's land near Kenner?
Usually yes, with the owner's permission. Stay clear of wells, streams, field drains and ponds that livestock drink from, above all if an infection killed the fish. A cotton cloth or newspaper makes a better wrapping than plastic. A marker or a plant makes the spot easy to find again, which matters if the land might one day be sold.
Can my vet in Kenner arrange a fish's cremation?
Often yes. Many small-town vets send small animals to a regional crematory and can include a fish with their regular collection. Ask whether their crematory accepts fish, whether you'll get ashes back for your fish's size and what the total cost will be.
