Avon, Indiana
Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Avon picture
Washington Township Park and the trails and ponds scattered through Avon's neighborhoods are popular with families and their animals. For scattering somewhere public, check with the park's managing office first. With many homes in HOA neighborhoods, potted perennials by the back door or a small planting bed can become a quiet memorial spot. A few trails even have benches families can sponsor.
Avon is a fast-growing town in eastern Hendricks County, about 12 miles west of downtown Indianapolis along US 36. Much of it was farmland a few decades ago, and today most families live in newer subdivisions with two-story homes and modest yards, alongside retail strips and schools. Indianapolis-area services treat Avon as local, so pickup is usually easy, but request a written total that includes collection.
In a smaller place like Avon, fish aftercare usually goes through the local vet, who sends small animals to a crematory in a larger city such as Indianapolis. Some vets have a weekly collection, so your fish may wait a few days in their freezer. That's fine: a fish frozen promptly keeps well. Ask the vet whether their crematory accepts fish and what, if anything, comes back for a fish of your size.
Avon is home to about 25,350 people, the 41st-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Indianapolis, about 12 miles (20 km) away, which is where some providers serving Avon are based.
For a second opinion on price, Plainfield (5 miles), Brownsburg (5 miles) and Indianapolis (13 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Avon routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Cremation in Indiana: a little context
In Indiana, about 56.5%[1] of people are cremated. That middle ground means most people are comfortable with cremation without it being automatic. For a fish, that's a helpful place to be: nobody expects a particular choice, and providers are used to hearing different requests. Decide by size. Larger koi and goldfish suit cremation; the smallest fish often suit a burial, a planter or a communal cremation.
We take the Indiana rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Avon, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
What the seasons mean for fish in Avon
Cold water hides problems in Avon. Fish in an iced-over pond barely eat and their immune systems slow right down, so an infection picked up in autumn may only show itself in spring. If fish die as the water warms after January, February and December, a vet who treats fish can learn far more from a fresh, chilled body than a frozen one. Decide before you bag the fish: fridge if you want answers, freezer if you just need time.
Cold months in Avon (January, February and December) mean that power cuts matter. A pond pump or tank heater that fails during a freeze can kill fish within hours. If it happens and you lose fish, keep them sealed in the freezer, or in a cold garage if the freezer is out too, while you get things running again. Aftercare can wait days or weeks without any problem.

Fish cremation quotes in Avon: what's normal
Cost is a fair worry, even for a small pet. In one US survey of pet owners, 61%[5] said the cost of aftercare was a concern. The good news for fish keepers in Avon is that there are low-cost options: communal cremation through a vet, a garden or planter burial that costs next to nothing, or a private cremation only for the larger fish where ash is worth keeping.
The full price table by size is on our Indiana page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

What Indiana allows for a pet fish
Rules about pets after death are set locally, and fish are usually covered by the same rules as other small pets. Garden burial is often allowed on land you own, with limits near wells and water. Scattering ashes directly into lakes and rivers may need permission. Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places, and some ban releasing goldfish outright.

For Indiana's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Indiana guide. Local rules in Avon can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
From the first minute to the last goodbye
- Take a breath. Nothing has to happen in the next hour once your fish is out of the water.
- Wrap your fish in a damp paper towel or cloth, then seal and label the bag; nobody in your Avon home wants a surprise in the freezer.
- Check on the survivors: run a water test and confirm the filter, heater and air are working. Should several fish seem off-color, ring a vet who treats fish.
- Ask your vet or a local fish store to name crematories around Avon that take fish.
- Choose private, communal or a burial, and ask for a written total before you agree.
- Drop your fish off in a cooler with ice packs, or arrange a pickup when a large koi is too heavy to lift and carry on your own.
- Plan a small goodbye, above all when children knew the fish: a picture they draw, a painted stone or something planted there.
Keeping your fish part of the family story
Avon's winters are relatively short by Indiana standards, with freezing weather mostly in December, January and February and January lows near 21 degrees. In that window, a pet's body can rest overnight in a cold garage. July is different: 85-degree afternoons and heavy, damp air call for air conditioning, a towel beneath your pet and frozen gel packs in a pillowcase beside it until collection.

Questions people ask
Why does the Avon page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 56.5%[1] of Indiana residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Indianapolis to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Indianapolis (roughly 12 miles from Avon) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How does Avon's weather affect fish aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Avon, with average highs around 85°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Avon?
Usually yes. Plainfield is about 5 miles away, Brownsburg is about 5 miles away and Indianapolis is about 13 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is it okay to flush a dead fish?
It's better not to. Fish can carry parasites and bacteria that shouldn't reach rivers, and wastewater isn't always fully treated, especially during storms. Never flush a fish that might still be alive. Burying it in the garden or a planter, or freezing it until you arrange cremation, is kinder and safer, and children often find a small burial less upsetting than a flush.
How do I find someone who will cremate a fish near Avon?
Start with your vet, who will know which crematory handles their small animals. Then call that crematory directly and ask whether it accepts fish. A local fish store or koi club may know who other keepers use. You can also send us your location and we'll email options that serve Avon.
