Romeoville, Illinois
Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Romeoville picture
Isle a la Cache, a forest preserve on an island in the Des Plaines River, and the I&M Canal Trail running past the village give Romeoville a strong link to water and history. Some residents remember a pet on these quiet stretches, others with a planting at home. Before scattering on forest preserve land, check the district's rules, or keep a small portion at home as well.
Romeoville sits in northern Will County about 30 miles southwest of Chicago, on the bluff above the Des Plaines River and the old Illinois and Michigan Canal. Much of the village grew from the late 1950s onward, and newer neighborhoods spread west toward Weber Road and Plainfield. Distribution centers line I-55 and Route 53, so rush-hour truck traffic can slow a provider's arrival.
Around Romeoville, plenty of families keep fish in garden ponds, stock tanks or a farm pond, and losses often happen in summer or right after the ice melts. If a fish dies in a pond that also serves livestock or feeds a creek, lift it out quickly and don't bury it near the water's edge. A burial further up the garden, or a cremation, keeps anything that caused the death away from the other fish.
Romeoville's population is around 41,281, the 38th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Chicago, roughly 30 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Romeoville run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Crest Hill (4 miles), Bolingbrook (4 miles) and Lockport (4 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Romeoville too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

How Illinois thinks about cremation
In Illinois, about 60.2%[1] of people are cremated. That middle ground means most people are comfortable with cremation without it being automatic. For a fish, that's a helpful place to be: nobody expects a particular choice, and providers are used to hearing different requests. Decide by size. Larger koi and goldfish suit cremation; the smallest fish often suit a burial, a planter or a communal cremation.
We take the Illinois rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Romeoville, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
When the weather sets the pace in Romeoville
Cold months in Romeoville (January, February, March, November and December) mean that power cuts matter. A pond pump or tank heater that fails during a freeze can kill fish within hours. If it happens and you lose fish, keep them sealed in the freezer, or in a cold garage if the freezer is out too, while you get things running again. Aftercare can wait days or weeks without any problem.
Spring clean-outs are when many Romeoville pond owners find out how winter went. If you lose fish as the water warms, test it straight away: rotting leaves and a winter's worth of waste can spike ammonia just as fish start feeding again. Freeze any fish you lose until the water is stable, then decide on cremation or a burial in the newly thawed ground.

What fish cremation costs in Romeoville
By our estimate, private cremation costs about twice as much as communal[5] across the markets we track, and for a fish that gap deserves a moment's thought. The extra pays for your own fish's ashes to come back to you. With a koi, that buys a few ounces for a small urn. With a neon tetra, it may buy very little. Ask any Romeoville provider what they would return, then decide whether the difference is worth it. The cost calculator lays out both routes side by side.

Burial, scattering and release rules in Illinois
Some fish diseases are taken seriously by governments. Koi herpesvirus, for example, is reportable in a number of countries because it spreads between ponds and fisheries. If a vet suspects a notifiable disease, follow their instructions on disposal, which may mean cremation rather than burial. For everyday losses from age or water problems, the normal rules for Illinois, set out below, are all you need.

What to do when your fish dies in Romeoville
- Take a breath. With your fish out of the water, there's no decision that can't wait an hour.
- Wrap your fish in a damp paper towel or cloth, then seal and label the bag; nobody in your Romeoville home wants a surprise in the freezer.
- Check on the survivors: aeration, filter, heater and a water test. If more than one fish looks unwell, call a vet who sees fish.
- Ask your vet or a local fish store to name crematories around Romeoville that take fish.
- Choose private, communal or a burial, and ask for a written total before you agree.
- Drop your fish off in a cooler with ice packs, or arrange a pickup when a large koi is too heavy to lift and carry on your own.
- Plan a small goodbye, especially if children were involved: a drawing, a stone or a plant for the spot.
Keeping your fish part of the family story
Romeoville's winters are long, January nights dip to about 16 degrees and frost stays in the ground from November into March. July afternoons reach about 84 degrees, with river-valley humidity. If your pet dies in the heat, lay the body on a waterproof sheet in the coolest room and ring it with ice packs until collection. In winter, a garage or back porch holds a small animal safely for a day.

Questions people ask
Does the Romeoville climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Is cremation common in Illinois?
For people, yes: about 60.2%[1] of Illinois deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Romeoville follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Romeoville?
The closest communities we cover are Crest Hill (about 4 miles), Bolingbrook (about 4 miles) and Lockport (about 4 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Romeoville too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Where are the providers that serve Romeoville actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Chicago, about 30 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Romeoville and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Does Illinois regulate pet crematories?
Only nine US states have laws written specifically for pet crematories, and only two require written documentation for consumers. Elsewhere, it's up to you to ask. For a fish, ask in writing whether the cremation is private, communal or partitioned, how your fish is identified and what will be returned for its size.
How do I explain a fish's death to my child?
Use simple, true words: the fish has died, its body stopped working and it won't come back. Avoid swapping in a lookalike. Let your child help with a small goodbye, such as choosing a stone, drawing a picture or picking a plant for the spot. A first pet's death is often a child's first loss, and handling it gently helps.
