Rock Island, Illinois
Who will cremate a fish in Rock Island?
Winters here run colder than in Chicago, with January lows near 15 degrees and frost from November well into March. July reaches about 86 and can feel sticky down by the river. After a cold-weather death, a garage or rear porch keeps a small body chilled overnight. In summer, lay it on a sheet in the basement if you have one, pack frozen bottles around it, and book pickup within a day.
Black Hawk State Historic Site, on the wooded bluff above the Rock River, is a familiar green space for many families here, and the Mississippi riverfront is another place people go to think about an animal they have lost. Getting ashes scattered on state or city ground requires asking the site office or city hall first. Many owners find it easier to bring ashes home and choose a garden spot when spring arrives.
Home burial is common in and around Rock Island, especially where families have land. For a fish, it's quick and meaningful: plant a water iris, a hosta or a small shrub on top so the spot becomes part of the garden. The one thing to avoid is burying a fish that died of disease close to a pond or stream, where rain can carry anything left in the soil back into the water.
Rock Island's population is around 36,225, the 51st-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover.
Families in Rock Island often end up using a provider from Davenport (4 miles, a larger centre), Moline (5 miles) and Bettendorf (9 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Cremation in Illinois: a little context
Roughly 60.2%[1] of funerals in Illinois end in cremation, so plenty of families mix both traditions, and couples sometimes disagree over a fish. One wants a grave by the pond; the other wants something to keep. A compromise works well: cremate the fish, keep a little of the ashes indoors and bury the rest beside a marginal plant near the water. Ashes carry no disease, so the pond stays safe, and you get both a keepsake and a place to visit.
The Illinois percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Rock Island, not as a count of pets.
Timing a fish's aftercare in Rock Island's climate
Frozen ground is the practical problem for a fish that dies in a Rock Island winter. With lows below freezing for 5 months of the year, a garden burial may simply not be possible until spring. That's fine. Seal your fish in a bag, label it and keep it in the freezer. Many families find it comforting to wait and bury their fish when they're planting the garden.
Rock Island winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, November and December. Pond fish slow right down in winter and live under the ice, but they still need a small opening for gases to escape. Many keepers use a floating de-icer or keep an air pump running near the surface. Losses under the ice, sometimes called winterkill, are usually only discovered when the pond thaws.

Paying for a fish's goodbye in Rock Island
Most families receive private cremation ashes back in about 5-10 days[5], and small pets are often among the quicker ones. For a fish in Rock Island, the price usually follows the provider's minimum for the smallest pets, as in the table below. Water cremation, where it's offered, falls in similar bands. If your fish is very small, ask whether a symbolic return costs the same as a private cremation.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Illinois: Illinois costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Illinois allows for a pet fish
You don't need a permit to have a fish cremated, but what you do with the body or the ashes can be governed by local rules. The most important one for fish keepers applies to living fish: never release a fish, or empty a pond or tank, into a creek, lake or drain. Many places restrict releasing non-native fish because they can spread disease and crowd out wildlife.
To find your county or city office in Illinois, start with the official Illinois local government directory.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Illinois level first; our Illinois rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Rock Island or your HOA adds anything.
The first day after a fish dies
- Take a breath. Nothing has to happen in the next hour once your fish is out of the water.
- Wrap your fish in a damp paper towel or cloth, then seal and label the bag; nobody in your Rock Island home wants a surprise in the freezer.
- Check on the survivors: run a water test and confirm the filter, heater and air are working. Should several fish seem off-color, ring a vet who treats fish.
- Ask your vet or a local fish store to name crematories around Rock Island that take fish.
- Choose private, communal or a burial, and ask for a written total before you agree.
- Drop your fish off in a cooler with ice packs, or book collection if it's a heavy koi you can't carry safely.
- Plan a small goodbye, especially if children were involved: a drawing, a stone or a plant for the spot.
Keeping a fish's memory close
Rock Island sits on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities, facing Davenport across the Mississippi, and serves as the Rock Island County seat. Older neighborhoods of wooden two-stories and brick bungalows climb the bluffs above downtown, so steep driveways and long front steps are common. Aftercare firms in the Quad Cities cross the river routinely; give the street address and explain if a hillside stairway leads up to your door.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Rock Island?
Usually yes. Davenport is about 4 miles away, Moline is about 5 miles away and Bettendorf is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How does Rock Island's weather affect fish aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Rock Island, with average highs around 86°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Why does the Rock Island page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 60.2%[1] of Illinois residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I bury a fish near a farm pond or well near Rock Island?
Keep any burial well away from ponds, streams and wells, especially if the fish died of disease. Rain can carry anything in the soil back into water that other animals or people use. Choose a spot further up the garden, or choose cremation instead.
How much ash does a fish leave after cremation?
Cremated remains usually weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, and fish tend toward the low end because they're mostly water with fine bones. A large koi might return a few ounces, enough for a small urn. A pond goldfish may leave a keepsake vial's worth. A small tank fish may leave nothing you could collect separately.
Is there free support for grieving a pet in Illinois?
Yes. Veterinary students trained by grief counselors answer the free Cornell Pet Loss Support Hotline, and Tufts University runs a free Pet Loss Support Helpline on weekday evenings. Both take calls from anywhere in the US. A long-lived koi or a child's first goldfish is a real loss, and they'll treat it as one.
