Palatine, Illinois
Who will cremate a fish in Palatine?
Palatine households often include a cat who has seen the kids through school, a cockatiel on the kitchen counter, or a rabbit in a hutch by the sliding door. Because many homes back onto tight lots or sit under association rules, cremation is the usual route. Deer Grove, the wooded preserve on the village's northwest edge, is a place many families think of when they picture where a pet's memory belongs.
Northwest suburban winters run long, with January lows around 19 and freezing temperatures lasting into March. During that season an attached garage or a cool laundry room keeps a pet's body safe overnight, swaddled in a towel inside a box. In July, highs reach about 85 with thick humidity, and the basement or the room with the strongest air conditioning becomes the better choice until you phone someone.
For a child in Palatine, a goldfish won at a county fair or a betta from the pet aisle is often their first pet. When it dies, a small ceremony in the garden with a painted stone can mean more than any cremation. If your child wants to keep something, some crematories return a token vial and certificate even for a very small fish, but ask what's inside before you pay for it.
Palatine is home to about 65,842 people, the 19th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Chicago, about 26 miles (42 km) away, which is where some providers serving Palatine are based.
Our pages for Rolling Meadows (2 miles), Arlington Heights (3 miles) and Buffalo Grove (5 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Palatine as well.

How Illinois thinks about cremation
About 60.2%[1] of people who die in Illinois are cremated, and the share has been rising steadily. Pet crematories have grown alongside it, and many now handle small and exotic pets as well as dogs and cats. If you're asking about a fish, you're likely to find at least one provider nearby that will take it. Whether you'll get meaningful ashes back depends on your fish's size, not on where you live.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Illinois figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Palatine tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
When the weather sets the pace in Palatine
Spring clean-outs are when many Palatine pond owners find out how winter went. If you lose fish as the water warms, test it straight away: rotting leaves and a winter's worth of waste can spike ammonia just as fish start feeding again. Freeze any fish you lose until the water is stable, then decide on cremation or a burial in the newly thawed ground.
Frozen ground is the practical problem for a fish that dies in a Palatine winter. With lows below freezing for 4 months of the year, a garden burial may simply not be possible until spring. That's fine. Seal your fish in a bag, label it and keep it in the freezer. Many families find it comforting to wait and bury their fish when they're planting the garden.

What fish cremation costs in Palatine
Where a Palatine provider offers water cremation, ask for both of its versions. By our estimate, private aquamation runs about two and a half times the price of communal aquamation at the same provider[5]. The process uses roughly the water of 1–3 pet baths[6], according to the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance, which appeals to many people saying goodbye to a water animal. What comes back is a soft white powder instead of grey ash, and the national price bands appear in the table below.

Before you bury, scatter or rehome in Illinois
If you rent, your lease matters more than any law. Most tenancy agreements don't mention pet burials, but a landlord or homeowners' association can still object to a grave in a shared garden. A planter on your own balcony or patio avoids the question, as does cremation. Pond fish in a rented garden raise one more point: ask before draining or filling in a pond when you move out. The notes below cover what Illinois allows.

For Illinois's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Illinois guide. Local rules in Palatine can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
A checklist for Palatine fish keepers
- If a sitter finds your fish dead while you're away, ask them to lift it out gently, wrap it in kitchen paper and freeze it in a labeled bag.
- Ask for a quick photo of the tank or pond and a note of anything unusual, such as a silent pump or cloudy water.
- Have them check the others and switch off automatic feeders if the water looks off.
- Make no aftercare decisions from a distance. A frozen fish will keep until you're home.
- When you're back, run your own water test, and only then weigh up burial against cremation without any rush.
- Thank your sitter. Discovering a dead pet is hard on the person who finds it, whoever the fish belonged to.
Keeping your fish part of the family story
Palatine is a village of about 66,000 in northwest Cook County, roughly 26 miles from the Loop. A compact downtown grew up around the Metra station, and beyond it spread subdivisions from the 1960s through the 1990s, plus a band of apartment complexes on the south side near Dundee and Rand roads. Pickup logistics differ between a garden apartment and a split-level with a drive, so say which you have when you call.

Questions people ask
How do Illinois attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Illinois human cremation rate at about 60.2%[1]. We show it on the Palatine page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 26 miles from Palatine) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Palatine?
January, February, March and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 85°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Palatine?
Usually yes. Rolling Meadows is about 2 miles away, Arlington Heights is about 3 miles away and Buffalo Grove is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I bury a fish near a farm pond or well near Palatine?
Keep any burial well away from ponds, streams and wells, especially if the fish died of disease. Rain can carry anything in the soil back into water that other animals or people use. Choose a spot further up the garden, or choose cremation instead.
Does Illinois regulate pet crematories?
Only nine US states have laws written specifically for pet crematories, and only two require written documentation for consumers. Elsewhere, it's up to you to ask. For a fish, ask in writing whether the cremation is private, communal or partitioned, how your fish is identified and what will be returned for its size.
