Bourbonnais, Illinois
Who will cremate a fish in Bourbonnais?
The Kankakee River runs past Bourbonnais, and Kankakee River State Park, a few miles upstream, has trails along the water and limestone bluffs where many locals spend weekends. State park rules on scattering ashes apply, so ask the park office first. Many families instead choose a corner of their own yard, or tuck a pinch of ashes into a keepsake they can carry.
Winters in Kankakee County are cold and windy, with January lows around 15 degrees and five months, November to March, of freezing weather; July highs reach about 84. The long cold season helps if a pet dies in winter, since a garage keeps the body chilled overnight. In summer, bring your pet into an air-conditioned room, pack cold packs around it, and ask for pickup that same day.
Home burial is common in and around Bourbonnais, especially where families have land. For a fish, it's quick and meaningful: plant a water iris, a hosta or a small shrub on top so the spot becomes part of the garden. The one thing to avoid is burying a fish that died of disease close to a pond or stream, where rain can carry anything left in the soil back into the water.
Bourbonnais's population is around 17,658, the 145th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Bourbonnais are based about 50 miles away in Chicago, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Bourbonnais sits within easy reach of Kankakee (6 miles), Frankfort (22 miles) and Park Forest (23 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Bourbonnais; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

What local funeral customs suggest for a pet fish
In Illinois, with a human cremation rate around 60.2%[1], habits often split by generation. Grandparents may remember burying a goldfish in a matchbox at the bottom of the garden; younger keepers who rent or move often lean toward cremation or a planter. Both instincts are sound. If the family can't agree, the fish's size makes a fair tiebreaker: the bigger and older the fish, the more a cremation tends to make sense.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Illinois figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Bourbonnais tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
What the seasons mean for fish in Bourbonnais
Bourbonnais winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, November and December. Pond fish slow right down in winter and live under the ice, but they still need a small opening for gases to escape. Many keepers use a floating de-icer or keep an air pump running near the surface. Losses under the ice, sometimes called winterkill, are usually only discovered when the pond thaws.
Some Bourbonnais families choose cremation in winter precisely because the ground is frozen, then scatter or bury the ashes in spring. For a larger koi, that gives you a small urn to keep through the cold months and a chance to plan something by the pond once the ice has gone. For a small fish, the freezer and a spring burial usually make more sense.

What fish cremation costs in Bourbonnais
Expect to pay the provider's small-pet minimum for your fish in Bourbonnais. PetMD says US communal cremation starts from about $50[5], and Embrace Pet Insurance gives wider national ranges for private cremation and aquamation, shown below. Before you pay for a private cremation, ask how much ash the provider expects to return. Cremated remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], and a fish can come in at the low end of that.

Local rules in Illinois
You don't need a permit to have a fish cremated, but what you do with the body or the ashes can be governed by local rules. The most important one for fish keepers applies to living fish: never release a fish, or empty a pond or tank, into a creek, lake or drain. Many places restrict releasing non-native fish because they can spread disease and crowd out wildlife.
To find your county or city office in Illinois, start with the official Illinois local government directory.
The Illinois page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Bourbonnais's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do when your fish dies in Bourbonnais
- If a sitter finds your fish dead while you're away, ask them to lift it out gently, wrap it in kitchen paper and freeze it in a labeled bag.
- Ask for a quick photo of the tank or pond plus a mention of anything odd, like a pump that's gone quiet or water turning cloudy.
- Have them check the others and, if the water doesn't look right, turn any automatic feeder off.
- Make no aftercare decisions from a distance. Once frozen, your fish can wait for your return.
- When you're back, run your own water test, and only then weigh up burial against cremation without any rush.
- Thank your sitter. Finding a dead pet is upsetting for them too, even when it's someone else's fish.
Keeping your fish part of the family story
Bourbonnais sits just north of Kankakee along the Kankakee River, about 50 miles south of Chicago, a village first settled by French Canadians and now home to Olivet Nazarene University. Housing is mostly single-family neighborhoods and newer subdivisions near I-57. Providers serving Kankakee County can collect from home; ask whether a trip charge applies, since some are based farther north in the Chicago suburbs.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 50 miles from Bourbonnais) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Bourbonnais?
January, February, March, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 84°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Is cremation common in Illinois?
For people, yes: about 60.2%[1] of Illinois deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Bourbonnais follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bourbonnais?
Usually yes. Kankakee is about 6 miles away, Frankfort is about 22 miles away and Park Forest is about 23 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
My fish jumped out of the tank. Could it still be alive?
Possibly, if it hasn't been out long. Many fish survive a few minutes on the floor. Slip it back into the aquarium straight away and watch the gills. If they move, keep the lights low and the water calm. If there's no movement after several minutes, the fish has probably died. Handle it with a damp cloth, fit a tight lid to protect the others and freeze the body while you decide.
Is a fish really a pet worth cremating?
If it mattered to you, yes. Koi can live 30 to 40 years and many families have kept the same fish for decades. A goldfish can live 6 to 7 years. The time you spent feeding, watching and caring for a fish is real, and so is the grief. Choose the goodbye that fits the fish and your family.
