Star, Idaho
Getting help with a fish loss around Star
Star gets real summer heat, with July highs around 92, and winter nights stay below freezing from November into March. If a pet dies on a hot day, keep them indoors on a soft blanket in a room with the blinds drawn and air conditioning on. In the cold months, a garage or covered porch keeps the body cool enough until you are ready to call.
Many families moved to Star for more room, and pets here often have big fenced yards and views of the foothills. When a companion dies, people tend to want to keep them near that home. Cremation offers that without the permanence of a grave, which matters in a place where families may move on as the area grows. An urn can go wherever the family goes next.
Home burial is common in and around Star, especially where families have land. For a fish, it's quick and meaningful: plant a water iris, a hosta or a small shrub on top so the spot becomes part of the garden. The one thing to avoid is burying a fish that died of disease close to a pond or stream, where rain can carry anything left in the soil back into the water.
Star's population is around 20,874, the 13th-largest of the 13 Idaho communities we cover. Boise, roughly 16 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Star run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Eagle (4 miles), Meridian (8 miles, a larger centre) and Caldwell (9 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

What local funeral customs suggest for a pet fish
With about 71.2%[1] of people cremated, cremation is firmly part of local life in Idaho. Families who keep ashes at home for a parent often feel the same about a long-lived pet, and a koi that has been in the family for twenty years is no exception. If you want your fish home in a small urn beside the pond or on a shelf, you'll find plenty of people here who understand exactly why.

When the weather sets the pace in Star
In a climate like Star's, the freezer is your friend all year. In summer it stops a dead fish breaking down; in winter it holds your fish until the ground thaws. Seal the fish in a bag with the air pressed out, wrap it in a towel and label it. You can then choose cremation or burial when the season and your own head allow.
Star gets both extremes: highs around 92°F in July and lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, November and December. Pond fish face oxygen crashes on hot, still summer nights and ice cover in winter. In summer, act fast: remove a dead fish quickly and get air moving. In winter, you have time, but frozen ground can rule out a garden burial until spring.

Why a small fish still has a minimum price
Where a Star provider offers water cremation, ask for both of its versions. By our estimate, private aquamation runs about two and a half times the price of communal aquamation at the same provider[5]. The process uses roughly the water of 1–3 pet baths[6], according to the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance, which appeals to many people saying goodbye to a water animal. What comes back is a soft white powder instead of grey ash, and the national price bands appear in the table below.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Idaho: Idaho costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, scattering and release rules in Idaho
Rules about pets after death are set locally, and fish are usually covered by the same rules as other small pets. Garden burial is often allowed on land you own, with limits near wells and water. Scattering ashes directly into lakes and rivers may need permission. Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places, and some ban releasing goldfish outright.

A calm plan for a fish's aftercare
- Make sure. Give it a full minute and look for any movement at the gills or fins. Cold, shock or plain exhaustion can leave a fish motionless on the bottom when it's still alive.
- Lift your fish out with a net once you're certain; left in the tank, it will start to spoil the water for the rest.
- Seal it in a bag or tub, press the air out and freeze it. Chill it in the fridge instead if you want a vet to find out why it died.
- Test the water the same day. Check ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature, then keep a close eye on the fish that are left.
- Decide by size. A koi or large goldfish suits private cremation; a small tank fish often suits a burial, a planter or communal cremation.
- Call a provider and ask what they'd return once they know how long and heavy it is, then have the total put in writing.
Keeping a fish's memory close
Star is a small but fast-growing city on the Boise River at the western edge of Ada County, about 16 miles from downtown Boise, with part of it reaching into Canyon County. What was farmland along State Highway 44 is now new subdivisions, with older homes and acreages scattered between them. Questions people ask
How do Idaho attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Idaho human cremation rate at about 71.2%[1]. We show it on the Star page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Star?
January, February, March, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 92°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Star?
Usually yes. Eagle is about 4 miles away, Meridian is about 8 miles away and Caldwell is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Star actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Boise, about 16 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Star and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can my vet in Star arrange a fish's cremation?
Often yes. Many small-town vets send small animals to a regional crematory and can include a fish with their regular collection. Ask whether their crematory accepts fish, whether you'll get ashes back for your fish's size and what the total cost will be.
How do I explain a fish's death to my child?
Use simple, true words: the fish has died, its body stopped working and it won't come back. Avoid swapping in a lookalike. Let your child help with a small goodbye, such as choosing a stone, drawing a picture or picking a plant for the spot. A first pet's death is often a child's first loss, and handling it gently helps.
