What local funeral customs suggest for a pet fish
About 77.3%[1] of people in Hawaii are cremated, and pet cremation is correspondingly common. For fish keepers, the practical upshot is that you're unlikely to be the first person to ask a local crematory about a koi. Many will have a clear policy: fish over a certain size cremated privately with ashes returned, very small fish offered communal cremation or a symbolic return. Ask to hear that policy before you book.

A fish is small, but the rules around water are not. Keep any burial well away from ponds, streams and wells, and don't flush a fish, dead or alive. Invasive fish released by owners are a real problem in many regions. For burial and scattering, the rules for Hawaii are summarised below, and your city or council may add its own.

Step by step, from tank to goodbye
- If a sitter finds your fish dead while you're away, ask them to lift it out gently, wrap it in kitchen paper and freeze it in a labeled bag.
- Ask for a quick photo of the tank or pond and a note of anything unusual, such as a silent pump or cloudy water.
- Have them check the others and switch off automatic feeders if the water looks off.
- Make no aftercare decisions from a distance. A frozen fish will keep until you're home.
- When you're back, run your own water test, and only then weigh up burial against cremation without any rush.
- Thank your sitter. Finding a dead pet is upsetting for them too, even when it's someone else's fish.
Keeping a fish's memory close

Will I have to travel to Honolulu to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Honolulu (roughly 10 miles from Kailua) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
