Union Park, Florida
Who will cremate a fish in Union Park?
The Econlockhatchee River runs through wilder country just east of Union Park, and its shaded trails are where many east Orlando households go to clear their heads. Some people find comfort in honoring a pet in that kind of setting. Public lands have their own scattering rules, so ask the managing agency before bringing ashes. A small urn at home can hold them while you decide.
Union Park stays warm through the year, with highs near 92F in the peak of summer and winter lows that rarely fall much below 50F. That warmth means a pet's body needs cooling soon after death. Lay your animal on a towel in the coldest part of the house, draw the blinds and turn the thermostat down. Heavy afternoon storms can flood side streets for an hour or two, so time calls around them.
In a town the size of Union Park, many families simply bury a small fish in the garden, and there's nothing wrong with that. Cremation tends to come up for larger or older fish: a koi that has been in the family for years, a big goldfish that outgrew three tanks, or a fish that belonged to someone who has since passed on. For those, the drive to a crematory near Orlando can be worth it.
Union Park's population is around 10,000, the 160th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Union Park are based about 9 miles away in Orlando, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Alafaya (3 miles, a larger centre), Goldenrod (4 miles) and Azalea Park (4 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Union Park too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Local attitudes to cremation
Cremation is the norm in Florida, where about 72.5%[1] of people are cremated. That doesn't make it the right choice for every fish. A tiny tank fish may leave nothing you could collect, and many families here pair a communal cremation or a garden burial with a memorial that needs no ash at all: a photo print, a plant or a favorite ornament from the tank. What matters is that the goodbye fits the fish.
That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Union Park only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Timing a fish's aftercare in Union Park's climate
In Union Park's long warm season, fish keep eating and growing for most of the year, which is good for them but means pond water needs close watching. If a fish dies without an obvious cause in the hotter months, take a water sample to a fish store or test it yourself the same day. Knowing whether oxygen, ammonia or temperature was to blame can save the others.
Union Park summers are hot, with July averaging highs around 92°F. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cold water, so pond fish are most at risk on hot, still nights, and losses are often found at dawn when oxygen is lowest. If you find a fish gasping at the surface, get an air pump or fountain running before anything else. Then lift out any fish that have died and put them straight in the freezer.

Why a small fish still has a minimum price
Where a Union Park provider offers water cremation, ask for both of its versions. By our estimate, private aquamation runs about two and a half times the price of communal aquamation at the same provider[5]. The process uses roughly the water of 1–3 pet baths[6], according to the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance, which appeals to many people saying goodbye to a water animal. What comes back is a soft white powder instead of grey ash, and the national price bands appear in the table below.

Local rules in Florida
If you rent, your lease matters more than any law. Most tenancy agreements don't mention pet burials, but a landlord or homeowners' association can still object to a grave in a shared garden. A planter on your own balcony or patio avoids the question, as does cremation. Pond fish in a rented garden raise one more point: ask before draining or filling in a pond when you move out. The notes below cover what Florida allows.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Union Park may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
From the first minute to the last goodbye
- Net your fish out gently and rest it on a soft cloth while you think.
- Freeze it the same day, sealed and wrapped. A frozen fish keeps for weeks, so the clock stops here.
- Work out its size: measure from nose to the fork of the tail and note the rough weight. Providers will ask.
- Tell the family, children included, plainly and truthfully. Slipping in a lookalike rarely ends well.
- Compare two options, for example a private cremation with a small urn and a garden burial under a new plant.
- Book your choice and find out how they keep track of your fish from hand-over to the day it comes back.
Memorials that suit a fish

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Union Park?
The closest communities we cover are Alafaya (about 3 miles), Goldenrod (about 4 miles) and Azalea Park (about 4 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Union Park too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Where are the providers that serve Union Park actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Orlando, about 9 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Union Park and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[1]. We show it on the Union Park page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Union Park?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 92°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How do I explain a fish's death to my child?
Use simple, true words: the fish has died, its body stopped working and it won't come back. Avoid swapping in a lookalike. Let your child help with a small goodbye, such as choosing a stone, drawing a picture or picking a plant for the spot. A first pet's death is often a child's first loss, and handling it gently helps.
My fish jumped out of the tank. Could it still be alive?
Possibly, if it hasn't been out long. Many fish survive a few minutes on the floor. Slip it back into the aquarium straight away and watch the gills. If they move, keep the lights low and the water calm. If there's no movement after several minutes, the fish has probably died. Handle it with a damp cloth, fit a tight lid to protect the others and freeze the body while you decide.
