Port Orange, Florida
Who to call first in Port Orange when a fish dies
Port Orange sits just south of Daytona Beach in Volusia County, on the mainland side of the Halifax River, with the Dunlawton Avenue bridge linking it to the beachside. Homes run from mid-century ranch houses near the river to newer subdivisions stretching west toward I-95 and the Spruce Creek area. When you ask for collection, mention your subdivision and whether you are east or west of US 1.
July highs in Port Orange hover near 90F, and winter lows are near 49F, so the ocean breeze does not do much to cool a house in August. After a pet dies, lay the body on an old beach towel in an inner room, with bagged ice wrapped in cloth beside it, and plan for collection the same day. Tropical storms can close the bridges, so call early when one is forecast.
One advantage of a community the size of Port Orange is that people talk. Your vet, the feed store or the person who sold you your pond fish will usually know whether anyone locally takes fish for cremation and how they treat them. Ask directly what they'd do with their own fish. A straight answer from someone who knows the area is worth more than a glossy website.
About 66,395 people live in Port Orange, which makes it the 49th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 45 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Port Orange run from there.
Our pages for Daytona Beach (7 miles), New Smyrna Beach (7 miles) and Edgewater (12 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Port Orange as well.

Cremation habits in Florida, and what they mean for a fish
With cremation chosen for roughly 72.5%[1] of deaths in Florida, many families have already arranged one for a relative and know the questions to ask. They apply to a fish on a smaller scale. How is my fish tracked at every stage? Is it cremated alone, or alongside other pets with a divider between them? When do the ashes come back, and in what? A provider that answers all three without fuss is usually a safe choice.
The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Heat, ice and your pond in Port Orange
In the hottest months (May, June, July, August and September), a dead fish breaks down fast, in the water and out of it. Net it out within the hour if you can, because decay releases ammonia that can harm the fish still living in the pond or tank. Seal it in a bag, press the air out and freeze it. Never leave a fish in a hot car on the way to a vet or crematory; use a cooler with ice packs.
If you'd like to plant something where a fish is buried, Port Orange's heat changes the timing. A shrub or perennial put in during July, with highs around 90°F, needs watering every day just to survive. Many gardeners mark the spot now with a simple stone and add the plant beside it in the cooler months, when it will root properly. A memorial plant that thrives means more than one that wilts in its first week.

Why a small fish still has a minimum price
In the US, almost every fish falls into the smallest weight band on a cremation price list. CareCredit's guide puts pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 for communal cremation and $100 to $175 for private[5]. That minimum exists because running the chamber costs much the same for a goldfish as for a small dog. Home collection, a decorative urn and a glass keepsake all add to the total, so ask any Port Orange provider for a written figure.

What Florida allows for a pet fish
Rules about pets after death are set locally, and fish are usually covered by the same rules as other small pets. Garden burial is often allowed on land you own, with limits near wells and water. Scattering ashes directly into lakes and rivers may need permission. Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places, and some ban releasing goldfish outright.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Port Orange.
The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Port Orange's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
The first day after a fish dies
- Remove the fish from the pond or tank promptly, especially in warm weather.
- Count your stock and look for a cause: a visiting heron, a pump that stopped, a sultry airless night or a water quality crash.
- Fix the water first: add aeration, do a partial water change if readings are off and hold off feeding for a day.
- Freeze the fish you lost, bagging and sealing them individually if separate cremations are what you'd like.
- Decide whether you want ashes back. When you don't, a communal cremation or a burial at a good distance from the pond is a simple, kind choice.
- Ask for a written quote with collection, the cremation itself and the container itemized.
- Mark the loss with a stone by the pond, a water plant or a note in your fish log.
Memorials that suit a fish
Port Orange is home to many retirees as well as young families, and pets here are part of mornings by the river and afternoons on the beachside. Nearly every owner here opts for cremation, and the urn usually stays in the house. Some take a small portion out on the Halifax River by kayak or boat. It is reasonable to ask a provider what happens to your pet at each step, from pickup to the return of the urn.

Questions people ask
How does Port Orange's weather affect fish aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Port Orange, with average highs around 90°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Why does the Port Orange page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Port Orange?
Usually yes. Daytona Beach is about 7 miles away, New Smyrna Beach is about 7 miles away and Edgewater is about 12 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Port Orange actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Orlando, about 45 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Port Orange and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How do I explain a fish's death to my child?
Use simple, true words: the fish has died, its body stopped working and it won't come back. Avoid swapping in a lookalike. Let your child help with a small goodbye, such as choosing a stone, drawing a picture or picking a plant for the spot. A first pet's death is often a child's first loss, and handling it gently helps.
Does Florida regulate pet crematories?
Only nine US states have laws written specifically for pet crematories, and only two require written documentation for consumers. Elsewhere, it's up to you to ask. For a fish, ask in writing whether the cremation is private, communal or partitioned, how your fish is identified and what will be returned for its size.
