Auburndale, Florida
What happens when a pet fish dies in Auburndale
Many Auburndale households live within sight of one of the city's lakes, such as Lake Ariana on the edge of downtown, and a memorial tied to the water feels natural to some families. A stone near the shoreline in your own yard, a framed photo of a favorite lakeside afternoon, or a little of the ashes released on the lake where allowed are options. Others would rather plant a citrus tree near the house.
July in Auburndale averages highs near 94F, and the afternoons are thick with humidity. If your pet passes indoors, settle them on tile in the room with the strongest air conditioning, cover them with a sheet, and nestle frozen gel packs against the belly. From May to October, plan on a pickup within the day, or ask your clinic in Lakeland or Winter Haven about refrigeration overnight.
Home burial is common in and around Auburndale, especially where families have land. For a fish, it's quick and meaningful: plant a water iris, a hosta or a small shrub on top so the spot becomes part of the garden. The one thing to avoid is burying a fish that died of disease close to a pond or stream, where rain can carry anything left in the soil back into the water.
Auburndale's population is around 21,369, the 117th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Orlando, about 39 miles (63 km) away, which is where some providers serving Auburndale are based.
For a second opinion on price, Winter Haven (6 miles, a larger centre), Lakeland (10 miles, a larger centre) and Haines City (11 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Auburndale routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

What local funeral customs suggest for a pet fish
In Florida, about 72.5%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this normal, pet crematories are usually plentiful and some specialize in small animals. For a fish, that means more choice: private or communal cremation, sometimes water cremation, and keepsakes like glass paperweights or pendants. It also means more providers to compare, which is worth doing, because prices for the smallest weight band vary more than you'd think.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Auburndale tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Timing a fish's aftercare in Auburndale's climate
Auburndale summers are hot, with July averaging highs around 94°F. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cold water, so pond fish are most at risk on hot, still nights, and losses are often found at dawn when oxygen is lowest. If you find a fish gasping at the surface, get an air pump or fountain running before anything else. Then lift out any fish that have died and put them straight in the freezer.
Summer trips are when many Auburndale pond losses happen. A neighbor feeding the fish in July may not realize that a clogged filter or a skipped top-up can starve the water of oxygen within a day. Before you travel in April, May, June, July, August, September and October, leave a short note: where the air pump plugs in, what normal looks like and what to do if a fish dies. The request is simple: bag it, freeze it and text you, rather than decide anything on your behalf.

Why a small fish still has a minimum price
Where an Auburndale provider offers water cremation, ask for both of its versions. By our estimate, private aquamation runs about two and a half times the price of communal aquamation at the same provider[5]. The process uses roughly the water of 1–3 pet baths[6], according to the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance, which appeals to many people saying goodbye to a water animal. What comes back is a soft white powder instead of grey ash, and the national price bands appear in the table below.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Florida: Florida costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Before you bury, scatter or rehome in Florida
Most of the decisions after a fish dies are yours to make. The exceptions are burial, scattering and anything that involves open water. Flushing is a poor idea everywhere: fish can carry parasites and bacteria, and not every drain leads to full treatment, especially during heavy rain. Here's what applies in Florida for burial and scattering.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Auburndale.
For Florida's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Florida guide. Local rules in Auburndale can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
A calm plan for a fish's aftercare
- Net your fish out gently and rest it on a soft cloth while you think.
- Freeze it the same day, wrapped and sealed in a bag. Once frozen, a fish will keep for weeks, and there's no more rush.
- Work out its size: a provider will want the length from nose to tail fork and an approximate weight, so take both now.
- Tell the family, children included, plainly and truthfully. Slipping in a lookalike rarely ends well.
- Compare two options, for example a private cremation with a small urn and a garden burial under a new plant.
- Book your choice and ask how your fish will be identified from drop-off to return.
Keeping your fish part of the family story
Auburndale is a Polk County city of lakes and citrus, set between Lakeland and Winter Haven along Interstate 4, with Orlando about 39 miles to the northeast. Housing ranges from older homes near the downtown and lakes to newer subdivisions on former grove land. Aftercare providers usually travel from Lakeland or Winter Haven, so ask about travel fees and whether they can come the same day.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 39 miles from Auburndale) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Auburndale?
The closest communities we cover are Winter Haven (about 6 miles), Lakeland (about 10 miles) and Haines City (about 11 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Auburndale too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Does the Auburndale climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Why does the Auburndale page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can you actually cremate a fish in Auburndale?
Yes. Many pet crematories that handle small animals will cremate a fish, and a koi or large goldfish is cremated much like any small pet. The limit is size: a betta, guppy or tetra may leave no ash that can be separated and returned. Call first, give the length and rough weight, and ask what they'd expect to give back.
Is there free support for grieving a pet in Florida?
Yes. Veterinary students trained by grief counselors answer the free Cornell Pet Loss Support Hotline, and Tufts University runs a free Pet Loss Support Helpline on weekday evenings. Both take calls from anywhere in the US. A long-lived koi or a child's first goldfish is a real loss, and they'll treat it as one.
