Cremation habits in California, and what they mean for a fish
Cremation is the everyday choice in California: about 70.5%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That familiarity tends to carry over to pets, and it helps fish owners too. Crematories here are used to small animals, so asking about a koi or a goldfish rarely raises an eyebrow. Where it can get awkward is the tiniest fish, and a provider that's honest about how little ash a betta leaves is worth choosing over one that simply takes your money.

Stockton weather, ponds and timing
In the hottest months (June, July, August and September), a dead fish breaks down fast, in the water and out of it. Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places. Often there's no licence written for them at all, and any inspection covers the equipment rather than how pets are handled. That puts the questions in your hands: ask in writing how a small body is labeled from drop-off to return and whether the cremation is truly individual. Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Stockton?

Is it okay to flush a dead fish?
It's better not to. Fish can carry parasites and bacteria that shouldn't reach rivers, and wastewater isn't always fully treated, especially during storms. Never flush a fish that might still be alive. Burying it in the garden or a planter, or freezing it until you arrange cremation, is kinder and safer, and children often find a small burial less upsetting than a flush.
Does California regulate pet crematories?
Only nine US states have laws written specifically for pet crematories, and only two require written documentation for consumers. Elsewhere, it's up to you to ask. For a fish, ask in writing whether the cremation is private, communal or partitioned, how your fish is identified and what will be returned for its size.
