Paramount, California
Who to call first in Paramount when a fish dies
Paramount grew from dairy and hay farming before it became the industrial and residential city it is today, and some older lots still have deep backyards where pets spent their afternoons. Many families here create a small memorial at home: a photo, a collar and a candle on a shelf, or a planter in the yard. Those familiar corners often feel more meaningful than anywhere further away.
Paramount sits inland enough that August afternoons reach the mid-80s, yet close enough to Long Beach that nights cool off and there is no frost. Many homes here are small stucco houses and older apartment units without central air. If your pet dies on a warm afternoon, the bathroom or kitchen floor is often the coolest place; rest them there on an old sheet with a wrapped bag of ice and call for collection that day.
Around Paramount, plenty of families keep fish in garden ponds, stock tanks or a farm pond, and losses often happen in summer or right after the ice melts. If a fish dies in a pond that also serves livestock or feeds a creek, lift it out quickly and don't bury it near the water's edge. A burial further up the garden, or a cremation, keeps anything that caused the death away from the other fish.
With roughly 50,755 residents, Paramount is the 157th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Long Beach, about 9 miles (15 km) away, which is where some providers serving Paramount are based.
Our pages for Bellflower (2 miles), Lynwood (3 miles) and Downey (3 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Paramount as well.

How California thinks about cremation
Some pet crematories in California, where the human cremation rate is near 70.5%[1], let families attend. For a fish, an attended cremation can be brief and quiet: a few minutes to say goodbye before the chamber door closes, and sometimes the chance to wait for the ashes. Not every provider offers it for small pets, and it usually costs more, so ask whether it's possible, how long it takes and whether children are welcome.
For the California figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Paramount rather than as pet data.
Season by season: fish losses in Paramount
Mild winters in Paramount mean parasites and bacteria never fully rest, and neither do the fish. Keepers here often see losses spread across the year rather than bunched into one season. When a fish is lost for no clear reason, think back over any new arrivals from the past month, test the water and look closely at the survivors' fins and gills. A run of losses is worth a vet's time; a single elderly fish usually isn't a mystery.
Mild weather in Paramount makes outdoor goodbyes easy most of the year. Some families bury a small fish under a new water plant or a pot of flowers within a day or two; others keep the fish frozen and wait for a weekend when the whole family can be there. Both are fine, and there's no season to wait for.

Budgeting for a koi or tank fish in Paramount
In the US, almost every fish falls into the smallest weight band on a cremation price list. CareCredit's guide puts pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 for communal cremation and $100 to $175 for private[5]. That minimum exists because running the chamber costs much the same for a goldfish as for a small dog. Home collection, a decorative urn and a glass keepsake all add to the total, so ask any Paramount provider for a written figure.
The California price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Rules worth knowing in California
Rules about pets after death are set locally, and fish are usually covered by the same rules as other small pets. Garden burial is often allowed on land you own, with limits near wells and water. Scattering ashes directly into lakes and rivers may need permission. Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places, and some ban releasing goldfish outright.
To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.
The California page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Paramount's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
From the first minute to the last goodbye
- Remove the fish from the pond or tank promptly, and with no delay at all if it's warm out.
- Count your stock and look for a cause: a heron, a pump failure, a hot still night or a sudden water problem.
- Fix the water first: add aeration, do a partial water change if readings are off and hold off feeding for a day.
- Freeze the fish you lost, each one in its own sealed bag if you want them cremated separately.
- Decide whether you want ashes back. When you don't, a communal cremation or a burial at a good distance from the pond is a simple, kind choice.
- Ask for a written quote that lists collection, the cremation and the container.
- Mark the loss with a stone by the pond, a water plant or a note in your fish log.
Memorials that suit a fish
Paramount is a compact Gateway Cities community in southeast Los Angeles County, about nine miles from Long Beach, where the 105 and 710 freeways and the Los Angeles River hem in neighborhoods of small houses, duplexes and apartments. Industrial blocks sit close to homes. When you request aftercare, mention whether you are in a house or apartment complex, where a vehicle can park, and whether you would like home collection or to bring your pet in yourself.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Long Beach to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Long Beach (roughly 9 miles from Paramount) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Paramount page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[1] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Paramount?
Usually yes. Bellflower is about 2 miles away, Lynwood is about 3 miles away and Downey is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Paramount climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can I bury a fish on a relative's land near Paramount?
Usually yes, with the owner's permission. Stay clear of wells, streams, field drains and ponds that livestock drink from, above all if an infection killed the fish. A cotton cloth or newspaper makes a better wrapping than plastic. A marker or a plant makes the spot easy to find again, which matters if the land might one day be sold.
My fish jumped out of the tank. Could it still be alive?
Possibly, if it hasn't been out long. Many fish survive a few minutes on the floor. Slip it back into the aquarium straight away and watch the gills. If they move, keep the lights low and the water calm. If there's no movement after several minutes, the fish has probably died. Handle it with a damp cloth, fit a tight lid to protect the others and freeze the body while you decide.
