El Monte, California
What happens when a pet fish dies in El Monte
El Monte is one of the most densely settled cities in the San Gabriel Valley, about twelve miles east of downtown Los Angeles, with a mix of small houses, duplexes and apartment complexes. Many households are multigenerational and many residents rely on the bus or the busway. If carrying your pet to a clinic is not practical, ask about home collection; describe stairs, gates and parking so the provider knows what to expect.
The Whittier Narrows area at El Monte's southern edge, with Legg Lake and its open grassland, is one of the largest green spaces nearby, and many families remember time spent there with their pets. County parks have their own rules about scattering, so ask first. Many families simply keep ashes at home, often on a shelf or altar alongside family photos.
Many El Monte families first think about fish aftercare when a koi they've fed for fifteen or twenty years dies. That can be a real shock, and people sometimes feel embarrassed about how much it hurts. You don't need to be. Koi can live for decades, recognize the person who feeds them and come to the surface when you walk up. A private cremation with ashes for a small urn is a perfectly reasonable response to that loss.
With roughly 105,075 residents, El Monte is the 64th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve El Monte are based about 12 miles away in Los Angeles, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are South El Monte (2 miles), Temple City (3 miles) and Rosemead (3 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to El Monte too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

How California thinks about cremation
With cremation chosen for roughly 70.5%[1] of deaths in California, many families have already arranged one for a relative and know the questions to ask. They apply to a fish on a smaller scale. How is my fish tracked at every stage? Is it cremated alone, or alongside other pets with a divider between them? When do the ashes come back, and in what? A provider that answers all three without fuss is usually a safe choice.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in El Monte tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
When the weather sets the pace in El Monte
In El Monte's long warm season, fish keep eating and growing for most of the year, which is good for them but means pond water needs close watching. If a fish dies without an obvious cause in the hotter months, take a water sample to a fish store or test it yourself the same day. Knowing whether oxygen, ammonia or temperature was to blame can save the others.
El Monte summers are hot, with August averaging highs around 91°F. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cold water, so pond fish are most at risk on hot, still nights, and losses are often found at dawn when oxygen is lowest. If you find a fish gasping at the surface, get an air pump or fountain running before anything else. Then lift out any fish that have died and put them straight in the freezer.

Paying for a fish's goodbye in El Monte
Cost is a fair worry, even for a small pet. In one US survey of pet owners, 61%[5] said the cost of aftercare was a concern. The good news for fish keepers in El Monte is that there are low-cost options: communal cremation through a vet, a garden or planter burial that costs next to nothing, or a private cremation only for the larger fish where ash is worth keeping.

Rules worth knowing in California
You don't need a permit to have a fish cremated, but what you do with the body or the ashes can be governed by local rules. The most important one for fish keepers applies to living fish: never release a fish, or empty a pond or tank, into a creek, lake or drain. Many places restrict releasing non-native fish because they can spread disease and crowd out wildlife.
To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.
We keep California's burial and scattering rules in one place: the California rules summary. Before a home burial in El Monte, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
A calm plan for a fish's aftercare
- Make sure. Give it a full minute and look for any movement at the gills or fins. Cold, shock or plain exhaustion can leave a fish motionless on the bottom when it's still alive.
- Lift your fish out with a net once you're certain; left in the tank, it will start to spoil the water for the rest.
- Seal it in a bag or tub, press the air out and freeze it. Chill it in the fridge instead if you want a vet to find out why it died.
- Test the water the same day. Check ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature, then keep a close eye on the fish that are left.
- Decide by size. Private cremation makes sense for a koi or big goldfish; a small tank fish is usually better buried, potted under a plant or cremated communally.
- Call a provider and ask what they'd return for your fish's length and weight, and get the total in writing.
Memorials that suit a fish
August afternoons in El Monte regularly reach the low 90s, and apartments can stay warm long into the night. If your pet dies on a hot day, lay the body on a cool tiled floor, put frozen bottles or ice packs wrapped in cloth against it, and ask for pickup as soon as possible. Winters are mild and rarely freeze, which gives a little more time.

Questions people ask
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[1]. We show it on the El Monte page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from El Monte?
Usually yes. South El Monte is about 2 miles away, Temple City is about 3 miles away and Rosemead is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve El Monte actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Los Angeles, about 12 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for El Monte and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Does the El Monte climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How much ash does a fish leave after cremation?
Cremated remains usually weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, and fish tend toward the low end because they're mostly water with fine bones. A large koi might return a few ounces, enough for a small urn. A pond goldfish may leave a keepsake vial's worth. A small tank fish may leave nothing you could collect separately.
Can two fish be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tank mates or a pair of koi that always swam together are sometimes cremated side by side, and many families find that comforting. Tell the provider clearly, because a private cremation normally means one animal. If you'd rather keep each fish's ashes separate, bag and label them individually before freezing and ask whether separate cremations cost more.
