When a fish you love dies in El Mirage

El Mirage, Arizona

Finding fish aftercare in El Mirage

The Agua Fria River runs along El Mirage's eastern edge, dry most of the year, and the White Tank Mountains rise on the western horizon at sunset. Neighborhood parks and the green belts between subdivisions are where local pets tend to spend their evenings. If you'd like to scatter ashes somewhere meaningful, a spot with a view of the White Tanks is a common wish; check the rules for any public land first.

El Mirage summers bring months of triple-digit afternoons, with July averaging around 105 and nights that barely cool. After a pet dies at home in July or August, there is no leaving it overnight; wrap the body, keep the air conditioning on and get it to a vet or crematory that day. Small lots, HOA rules and caliche soil rule out backyard burial for most households, so cremation is the usual choice.

One advantage of a community the size of El Mirage is that people talk. Your vet, the feed store or the person who sold you your pond fish will usually know whether anyone locally takes fish for cremation and how they treat them. Ask directly what they'd do with their own fish. A straight answer from someone who knows the area is worth more than a glossy website.

About 35,820 people live in El Mirage, which makes it the 27th-largest of the 29 Arizona communities we cover. Peoria, roughly 5 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover El Mirage run from there.

Our pages for Surprise (4 miles, a larger centre), Peoria (5 miles, a larger centre) and Glendale (9 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers El Mirage as well.

80.7%[1]

The NFDA projected Arizona's cremation rate at 80.7% for 2024.

10 million[2]

About 10 million US households keep freshwater fish.

13%[3]

13% of UK households keep an indoor fish tank.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The numbers above come from UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026 and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release, if you'd like to read the original sources.

Cremation habits in Arizona, and what they mean for a fish

In Arizona, about 80.7%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this normal, pet crematories are usually plentiful and some specialize in small animals. For a fish, that means more choice: private or communal cremation, sometimes water cremation, and keepsakes like glass paperweights or pendants. It also means more providers to compare, which is worth doing, because prices for the smallest weight band vary more than you'd think.

The Arizona figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Heat, ice and your pond in El Mirage

In the hottest months (May, June, July, August, September and October), a dead fish breaks down fast, in the water and out of it. Net it out within the hour if you can, because decay releases ammonia that can harm the fish still living in the pond or tank. Seal it in a bag, press the air out and freeze it. Never leave a fish in a hot car on the way to a vet or crematory; use a cooler with ice packs.

In El Mirage's long warm season, fish keep eating and growing for most of the year, which is good for them but means pond water needs close watching. If a fish dies without an obvious cause in the hotter months, take a water sample to a fish store or test it yourself the same day. Knowing whether oxygen, ammonia or temperature was to blame can save the others.

Fish cremation prices for El Mirage families

Many El Mirage families arrange a fish's cremation through their vet, which is convenient but not always the cheapest route. In a US survey, 48.8%[5] of pet owners named their veterinary team as their main source of advice on pet death. You can also call a crematory directly and compare. For a fish, the difference between two quotes is often a collection fee you don't need.

Before you bury, scatter or rehome in Arizona

Some fish diseases are taken seriously by governments. Koi herpesvirus, for example, is reportable in a number of countries because it spreads between ponds and fisheries. If a vet suspects a notifiable disease, follow their instructions on disposal, which may mean cremation rather than burial. For everyday losses from age or water problems, the normal rules for Arizona, set out below, are all you need.

Arizona keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers El Mirage.

We keep Arizona's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Arizona rules summary. Before a home burial in El Mirage, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.

Step by step, from tank to goodbye

  1. Remove the fish from the pond or tank promptly, and with no delay at all if it's warm out.
  2. Count your stock and look for a cause: a heron, a pump failure, a hot still night or a sudden water problem.
  3. Fix the water first: get more air into it, change part of the water if your test readings are wrong and skip feeding for a day.
  4. Freeze the fish you lost, bagging and sealing them individually if separate cremations are what you'd like.
  5. Decide whether you want ashes back. If not, communal cremation or a burial well away from the pond is simple and kind.
  6. Ask for a written quote with collection, the cremation itself and the container itemized.
  7. Mark the loss with a stone by the pond, a water plant or a note in your fish log.

Keeping your fish part of the family story

El Mirage is a small, busy West Valley city squeezed between Surprise and Sun City, about 5 miles from Peoria, with Grand Avenue and the railroad running along its edge. Most homes are in subdivisions built in the 2000s boom, on compact lots with young families and plenty of pets. Clinics and providers across the West Valley are within a short drive, so for most households it's practical to take a pet in yourself.

Questions people ask

Does the El Mirage climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 105°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

Will I have to travel to Peoria to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Peoria (roughly 5 miles from El Mirage) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Why does the El Mirage page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 80.7%[1] of Arizona residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from El Mirage?

Usually yes. Surprise is about 4 miles away, Peoria is about 5 miles away and Glendale is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

What should I do with the other fish after one dies?

Remove the dead fish quickly, then test the water for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature. Check the filter, pump and heater. If readings are off, do a partial water change and hold off feeding for a day. Watch the others closely for a week. If more fish look unwell, a vet who sees fish can examine a freshly chilled body.

My fish jumped out of the tank. Could it still be alive?

Possibly, if it hasn't been out long. Many fish survive a few minutes on the floor. Slip it back into the aquarium straight away and watch the gills. If they move, keep the lights low and the water calm. If there's no movement after several minutes, the fish has probably died. Handle it with a damp cloth, fit a tight lid to protect the others and freeze the body while you decide.
