Fish & Koi Cremation in Wales

Wales, the United Kingdom

Fish & Koi Cremation in Wales: what to know

Many children across Wales have a goldfish or betta as their first pet, and its death is often their first real loss. A small goodbye, such as a garden burial with a painted stone or a planter on the windowsill, helps more than a quick flush. For larger fish, cremation gives families something to keep.

Prices for fish cremation in Wales follow the smallest weight band on a provider's list, so even a tiny fish usually costs the provider's minimum for a private cremation. That's why honest providers will tell you what to expect back before you pay. For a small fish, communal cremation or a garden burial is often the more sensible choice.

How we calculated this

The sum of our per-city estimates for the 2 communities in Wales on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a fish. Households with several pets count once.

Cremation in Wales: a little context

Cremation is the everyday choice in Wales: about 80.46%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That familiarity tends to carry over to pets, and it helps fish owners too. Crematories here are used to small animals, so asking about a koi or a goldfish rarely raises an eyebrow. Where it can get awkward is the tiniest fish, and a provider that's honest about how little ash a betta leaves is worth choosing over one that simply takes your money.

Cremation Society of Great Britain, Progress of Cremation 1885-2025 (2025) publishes the Wales rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

Fish cremation prices for Wales families

Following its review of vet services, the CMA wants every practice to offer a communal option and set out its prices. That matters, because only 47%[2] of UK cremation buyers recalled being told about a range of options, including communal cremation or home burial. For a fish in Wales, ask for all three: individual, communal and what the practice would suggest if you'd rather bury at home.

UK prices are unusually well documented thanks to the Competition and Markets Authority's recent review. Prices run from about £50 for a communal cremation of a small pet to over £300 for an individual cremation of a large one[3], and a fish will always sit at the small-pet end. Communal cremation is two to five times cheaper[4] than individual cremation for the same weight, so for a small tank fish it's often the sensible choice. Ask for a written price list; UK vets are now expected to share one.

Before you bury, scatter or rehome in Wales

Some fish diseases are taken seriously by governments. Koi herpesvirus, for example, is reportable in a number of countries because it spreads between ponds and fisheries. If a vet suspects a notifiable disease, follow their instructions on disposal, which may mean cremation rather than burial. For everyday losses from age or water problems, the normal rules for Wales, set out below, are all you need.

The UK is a nation of pond keepers: 11%[6] of households have an outdoor pond with fish. In England you need permission to put fish into rivers, lakes and many ponds connected to them, so never release unwanted fish. Following the CMA's review, it's reasonable to ask any vet or pet crematorium for a written small-pet price list, and to ask what they'd return for a fish.

  • Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
  • Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
  • Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
  • Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.

A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.

The first day after a fish dies

  1. If a sitter finds your fish dead while you're away, have them take it out carefully, wrap it in a paper towel and put it in the freezer in a labeled bag.
  2. Ask for a quick photo of the tank or pond and a note of anything unusual, such as a silent pump or cloudy water.
  3. Have them check the others and switch off automatic feeders if the water looks off.
  4. Make no aftercare decisions from a distance. Once frozen, your fish can wait for your return.
  5. When you're back, test the water yourself, then choose between burial and cremation calmly.
  6. Thank your sitter. Finding a dead pet is upsetting for them too, even when it's someone else's fish.

Ways to mark the spot

A fish's memorial doesn't have to be at home. Some families donate to a local aquarium society, a school science club or a river cleanup group in their fish's name. It's a quiet way of turning a small loss into something useful for the next generation of fish keepers in Wales.

Questions people ask

Is pet cremation common in Wales?

For people, about 80.46%[1] of deaths in Wales end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. For fish, the choice depends more on size than on custom: larger fish are often cremated, while small tank fish are commonly buried.

Can I scatter my koi's ashes in a lake or river in Wales?

It depends on who manages the water, and some public waters require permission. Scattering around your own pond, in the garden rather than into the water, avoids the question and keeps the memorial close. If you use a public place, choose a quiet spot and check the rules first.

How long does it take to get a fish's ashes back in Wales?

Many families receive private cremation ashes within one to two weeks. In rural areas, where small pets travel to a regional crematory on a set schedule, it can take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.

How many communities do you cover in Wales?

We currently have local fish aftercare guides for 2 communities in Wales, including Cardiff and Swansea. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules for burial and scattering, and how to find a provider that accepts fish.

Is it legal to flush or release a fish in Wales?

Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places because non-native fish can spread disease and harm native species. Flushing a dead fish isn't a good idea either, as not all wastewater is fully treated. Freeze the fish and choose a burial or cremation instead.

How much does fish cremation cost in Wales?

A fish nearly always falls in the smallest weight band, so expect the provider's minimum price for a small pet. Communal cremation is cheaper and returns no ashes. Home collection, urns and keepsakes add to the total. Ask for an itemized written quote, and ask what they'd return for your fish's size before paying for a private cremation.
