Who will cremate a fish in Belfast?
Belfast is a city of terraced streets, semi-detached suburbs and a growing number of apartments, with many homes sharing small back yards. If your pet dies at home, the council's guidance is that the owner is responsible for arranging removal from private property, so it's up to you to choose what happens next. Local attitudes to cremation
Burial is still the more common tradition in Northern Ireland, where only about 24.2%[2] of people are cremated. Families here often have more garden space, which makes a fish burial easy: a quiet corner, a flat stone and perhaps a plant. Cremation remains an option, and some families choose it specifically because a pond fish that died of disease shouldn't be buried near other fish.

Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places. Often there's no licence written for them at all, and any inspection covers the equipment rather than how pets are handled. That puts the questions in your hands: ask in writing how a small body is labeled from drop-off to return and whether the cremation is truly individual. Is cremation common in Northern Ireland?

Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Belfast follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Belfast?
Usually yes. Glasgow is about 110 miles away, Edinburgh is about 143 miles away and Liverpool is about 145 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
My fish jumped out of the tank. Could it still be alive?
Possibly, if it hasn't been out long. Many fish survive a few minutes on the floor. Slip it back into the aquarium straight away and watch the gills. If they move, keep the lights low and the water calm. If there's no movement after several minutes, the fish has probably died. Handle it with a damp cloth, fit a tight lid to protect the others and freeze the body while you decide.
Is a fish really a pet worth cremating?
If it mattered to you, yes. Koi can live 30 to 40 years and many families have kept the same fish for decades. A goldfish can live 6 to 7 years. The time you spent feeding, watching and caring for a fish is real, and so is the grief. Choose the goodbye that fits the fish and your family.
Can two fish be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tank mates or a pair of koi that always swam together are sometimes cremated side by side, and many families find that comforting. Tell the provider clearly, because a private cremation normally means one animal. If you'd rather keep each fish's ashes separate, bag and label them individually before freezing and ask whether separate cremations cost more.
