Fish & Koi Cremation in Thailand: what to know
Fish aftercare in Thailand follows the same basic choices as anywhere: private cremation with ashes returned, communal cremation without, or a respectful burial. What changes from country to country is who offers the service, what it costs and which rules apply to burial and to releasing fish. This page covers Thailand as a whole; each city page adds local detail.
Across Thailand, the weather shapes fish aftercare as much as the rules do. Hot spells cause pond oxygen crashes and speed up decay, so prompt action matters; cold winters freeze ponds and ground, so many families keep a fish in the freezer until spring. Both situations are covered on the city pages below.

Cremation in Thailand: a little context
Cremation is the everyday choice in Thailand: about 80.0%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That familiarity tends to carry over to pets, and it helps fish owners too. Crematories here are used to small animals, so asking about a koi or a goldfish rarely raises an eyebrow. Where it can get awkward is the tiniest fish, and a provider that's honest about how little ash a betta leaves is worth choosing over one that simply takes your money.
That Thailand rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Fish cremation quotes in Thailand: what's normal
In Thailand, small-pet cremation is widely available where pet funeral services exist, and many providers offer a short farewell as part of the package. For a fish, confirm they accept aquatic pets and ask what will be returned. The table shows published small-pet prices from Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo as a guide.
In Tokyo, a private provider's communal cremation for a small pet costs about 4.8 times the ward's own collection fee, by our estimate[2]. The municipal route is cheaper but returns no ashes, which for a tiny fish may make little practical difference. For a larger koi or arowana near Thailand, the private option buys a ceremony and a return; ask exactly what's included before choosing.
| Place | Communal | Individual |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo (pet under 5 kg) | JPY 14,300 | JPY 22,000 |
| Singapore (cat under 5 kg) | SGD 160 | SGD 280 |
| Hong Kong (1–5 kg pet) | n/a | HKD 1,300 |

Before you bury, scatter or rehome in Thailand
Some fish diseases are taken seriously by governments. Koi herpesvirus, for example, is reportable in a number of countries because it spreads between ponds and fisheries. If a vet suspects a notifiable disease, follow their instructions on disposal, which may mean cremation rather than burial. For everyday losses from age or water problems, the normal rules for Thailand, set out below, are all you need.
Step by step, from tank to goodbye
- Remove the fish from the pond or tank promptly, and with no delay at all if it's warm out.
- Count your stock and look for a cause: a visiting heron, a pump that stopped, a sultry airless night or a water quality crash.
- Fix the water first: get more air into it, change part of the water if your test readings are wrong and skip feeding for a day.
- Freeze the fish you lost, bagging and sealing them individually if separate cremations are what you'd like.
- Decide whether you want ashes back. If not, communal cremation or a burial well away from the pond is simple and kind.
- Ask for a written quote that lists collection, the cremation and the container.
- Mark the loss your own way: a stone at the pond's edge, a new water plant or an entry in your log.
Small memorials for a small life in Thailand
Some families in Thailand scatter a koi's ashes around a favorite tree, under the waterfall's edge stones or in a flower bed where the fish could be seen from the house. If you'd like to use a public park or lake, check the rules first and choose a quiet, respectful spot away from paths.
If Thailand is not quite where you are, all locations has the rest. Otherwise the services page, the tools and the poll results are the useful next stops.

Questions people ask
Is it legal to flush or release a fish in Thailand?
Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places because non-native fish can spread disease and harm native species. Flushing a dead fish isn't a good idea either, as not all wastewater is fully treated. Freeze the fish and choose a burial or cremation instead.
Do pet crematories in Thailand accept fish?
Many do, particularly for larger fish such as koi and pond goldfish. Some decline very small fish because there's nothing meaningful to return, or offer communal cremation or a symbolic return instead. Call ahead with your fish's length and weight and ask what they'd expect to give back.
How long does it take to get a fish's ashes back in Thailand?
Many families receive private cremation ashes within one to two weeks. In rural areas, where small pets travel to a regional crematory on a set schedule, it can take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
How much does fish cremation cost in Thailand?
A fish nearly always falls in the smallest weight band, so expect the provider's minimum price for a small pet. Communal cremation is cheaper and returns no ashes. Home collection, urns and keepsakes add to the total. Ask for an itemized written quote, and ask what they'd return for your fish's size before paying for a private cremation.
Where can I find out why my fish died in Thailand?
An aquatic vet is the best first stop, and pond clubs or aquarium shops generally know one. Some university vet schools and fish health labs also examine samples. Keep the body chilled in the fridge rather than frozen and call quickly, since ice crystals ruin the tissue a pathologist needs. Knowing the cause can protect the fish you still have.
Can I scatter my koi's ashes in a lake or river in Thailand?
It depends on who manages the water, and some public waters require permission. Scattering around your own pond, in the garden rather than into the water, avoids the question and keeps the memorial close. If you use a public place, choose a quiet spot and check the rules first.
