Fish & Koi Cremation in Zurich: what to know
Few pet crematories in Zurich advertise fish at all, yet many will accept one if asked. That gap between what's listed and what's possible is why a short call matters. Say it's a fish, give its length and ask three things: will you take it, what would come back and what's the total? If you'd rather not make the calls yourself, we can email options that serve your part of Zurich.
We cover 3 communities in Zurich, from Zurich, Kusnacht and Zollikon to much smaller towns, and the fish questions change less between them than you might think. Everywhere, the first job is to get the fish out of the water and cold, then check on the others. What varies is the distance to a provider, how long a vet's collection takes and whether frozen ground holds up a burial. Each city page fills in those local details.

Cremation, custom and the family fish in Zurich
With cremation chosen for roughly 90%[1] of deaths in Zurich, many families have already arranged one for a relative and know the questions to ask. They apply to a fish on a smaller scale. How is my fish tracked at every stage? Is it cremated alone, or alongside other pets with a divider between them? When do the ashes come back, and in what? A provider that answers all three without fuss is usually a safe choice.
We take the Zurich percentage from bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Fish cremation quotes in Zurich: what's normal
Europe has about 17.6 million[2] home aquariums, so fish owners are far from unusual. In Zurich, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, but you can contact one directly too. The table shows published small-pet prices from several countries to give you a feel for Switzerland.
Across Europe, small-pet cremation prices vary by country but follow the same logic: collective cremation costs less than individual, and a fish always falls in the lowest weight band. In Ireland, one crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 / EUR 250[3] for pets under 2 kg and up to 10 kg respectively. Ask any provider near Zurich what they'd return for your fish's size.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Ireland (under 2 kg) | n/a | from €150 |
| Germany (all sizes) | €85 to €205 | €165 to €375 |
| Netherlands (range across providers) | €49 to €330 | €70 to €700 |
| Norway (1–20 kg) | from NOK 1,190 | NOK 3,790 |

Burial, scattering and release rules in Zurich
Most of the decisions after a fish dies are yours to make. The exceptions are burial, scattering and anything that involves open water. Flushing is a poor idea everywhere: fish can carry parasites and bacteria, and not every drain leads to full treatment, especially during heavy rain. Here's what applies in Zurich for burial and scattering.
Step by step, from tank to goodbye
- Book an aquatic vet when an elderly or ill fish is obviously in distress. An anesthetic overdose, given gently, lets it slip away peacefully.
- Settle the aftercare question when you book, so you know whether the vet will send your fish to a crematory or hand it back to you.
- Carry it in a tub of water from its own tank or pond, lid on, with a battery air pump for a long drive.
- Decide whether you want to stay. Being present feels right to many people, but saying your goodbye at home beforehand is just as valid.
- Choose private cremation, communal cremation or a home burial and have the full price written down before you head home.
- Watch the remaining fish over the next week, especially if the one you lost had an infection.
Remembering your fish in Zurich
For a small tank fish, the memorial can be as simple as keeping its favorite ornament, framing a photo or planting something in a pot on the windowsill. Children often like to paint a stone or draw a picture to bury with the fish. None of these depend on ash, so they suit even the tiniest fish.

Questions people ask
Can I bury a fish in my garden in Zurich?
Usually yes, on land you own, with sensible care: wrap the fish in paper or cotton and keep well away from ponds, streams and wells. Local rules can be stricter, and landlords may object. A large planter with a new plant is a good alternative.
Where can I find out why my fish died in Zurich?
An aquatic vet is the best first stop, and pond clubs or aquarium shops generally know one. Some university vet schools and fish health labs also examine samples. Keep the body chilled in the fridge rather than frozen and call quickly, since ice crystals ruin the tissue a pathologist needs. Knowing the cause can protect the fish you still have.
Is it legal to flush or release a fish in Zurich?
Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places because non-native fish can spread disease and harm native species. Flushing a dead fish isn't a good idea either, as not all wastewater is fully treated. Freeze the fish and choose a burial or cremation instead.
Can I keep a koi's ashes outdoors by the pond in Zurich?
Yes, if the container can cope with the weather. Choose a sealed, frost-proof urn in stone, metal or glazed ceramic, or place a small inner urn inside a hollow garden ornament. Ordinary wood and unglazed pottery crack in freezing weather and fade in strong sun. Set it on a firm base away from the splash zone, and consider burying most of the ashes and keeping only a little on display.
Who can take my remaining fish if I give up the pond in Zurich?
Ask aquarium shops, pond societies, rehoming groups and keepers you know. Some shops take fish for store credit or simply for free. Releasing them into open water is restricted in many places, however suitable it looks, because pet fish bring diseases and unbalance native wildlife.
Do winters in Zurich affect fish burial?
In the colder parts of Zurich, frozen ground can make digging impossible for months. Keep your fish sealed in the freezer until spring, or arrange cremation in the meantime. In Zurich, one of the coldest places we cover, average winter lows reach about °F.
