Getting help with a fish loss around Gothenburg
Slottsskogen, the Delsjö lakes and the rocky islands of the southern archipelago are woven into Gothenburg family life, and many pets, from rabbits to parrots, share homes with people who spend every free hour outdoors. Sweden has a high cremation rate for people, and pet cremation with ashes returned is common. Burial of small pets on your own land is often possible, but check local rules on groundwater first.
Gothenburg's west-coast climate is milder than much of Sweden but famously wet and windy, with dark winter afternoons and cool, bright summers. In most seasons you have some hours to think, as long as your pet is kept on a towel in the coolest room. During a rare summer heat spell, add cool packs and move faster. Winter storms off the Kattegat can delay travel, so a short wait is normal.
Reef and saltwater tanks are more common in a city like Gothenburg than most people assume, and a marine fish often lived far longer than its price tag suggested. A clownfish, tang or wrasse is usually small, so there may be little to return after cremation; ask before paying for a private service. First, though, check salinity, temperature and the return pump. One death in a reef tank can be the first sign of a system problem that will reach the corals and invertebrates next.

How Sweden thinks about cremation
Cremation is the norm in Sweden, where about 84.69%[1] of people are cremated. That doesn't make it the right choice for every fish. A tiny tank fish may leave nothing you could collect, and many families here pair a communal cremation or a garden burial with a memorial that needs no ash at all: a photo print, a plant or a favorite ornament from the tank. What matters is that the goodbye fits the fish.

Gothenburg weather, ponds and timing
If you keep pond fish, the seasons in Gothenburg will shape both their risks and your goodbye. Hot spells can cause oxygen crashes; cold snaps can freeze the surface; storms can knock out a pump. Whatever caused a loss, check the water and the equipment first, then turn to aftercare once the remaining fish are safe.

Paying for a fish's goodbye in Gothenburg
For a koi or large pond fish near Gothenburg, individual cremation at the small-pet rate makes sense. For small aquarium fish, many European families choose a garden burial instead, which is allowed in many countries on your own land if you follow local rules on keeping clear of water. Ask local providers for both individual and collective prices.

Local rules in Vastra Gotaland
Ashes from a fish are mostly bone mineral, and scattering them is rarely regulated on your own land. Tipping them into a pond that still holds fish can cloud the water, so many keepers scatter around the edge instead. Public lakes, rivers and parks are a different matter: the body that manages them can set its own rules. Here's what applies in Vastra Gotaland.
The first day after a fish dies
- Take a breath. Nothing has to happen in the next hour once your fish is out of the water.
- Wrap your fish in a damp paper towel or cloth, seal it and label it so no one in Gothenburg gets a shock at the freezer.
- Check on the survivors: run a water test and confirm the filter, heater and air are working. Should several fish seem off-color, ring a vet who treats fish.
- Ask your vet or a local fish store to name crematories around Gothenburg that take fish.
- Choose private, communal or a burial, and ask for a written total before you agree.
- Drop your fish off in a cooler with ice packs, or book collection if it's a heavy koi you can't carry safely.
- Plan a small goodbye, above all when children knew the fish: a picture they draw, a painted stone or something planted there.
Small memorials for a small life in Gothenburg
Gothenburg's pets live in a mix of stone-and-wood landshövdingehus in older districts like Majorna, larger apartment blocks across Hisingen and houses with gardens in the suburbs. Many households manage without a car and get around by tram. If carrying your pet out and across town feels impossible today, ask whether a provider can collect from your address, and mention stairs, lift and where a vehicle can stop.

Questions people ask
Why does the Gothenburg page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 84.69%[1] of Sweden residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a vet put my sick fish to sleep in Gothenburg?
Yes. A vet with fish experience can end its suffering by adding an anesthetic overdose to its water, and the fish simply falls asleep. Vets advise against home methods such as freezing a live fish or flushing it. Transport it in its own water with a lid on, and raise aftercare during the same appointment, so the vet can arrange cremation or hand the body back to you for burial.
Is there a fish vet in Gothenburg?
Large cities are the most likely places to have aquatic or exotic-animal vets. If you're losing several fish, one can examine a freshly chilled body to look for parasites or infection. Your regular vet, a koi club or a local fish store can usually point you to someone who sees fish.
How long can I keep a dead fish in the freezer?
Sealed in a bag with the air pressed out and wrapped in a towel, a fish keeps for weeks or even months. That gives you time to find a provider or wait for a burial day. Label the bag clearly. If you want a vet to find out why your fish died, chill it in the fridge instead and call them quickly, because freezing damages the tissue.
How much ash does a fish leave after cremation?
Cremated remains usually weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, and fish tend toward the low end because they're mostly water with fine bones. A large koi might return a few ounces, enough for a small urn. A pond goldfish may leave a keepsake vial's worth. A small tank fish may leave nothing you could collect separately.
What should I do with the other fish after one dies?
Remove the dead fish quickly, then test the water for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature. Check the filter, pump and heater. If readings are off, do a partial water change and hold off feeding for a day. Watch the others closely for a week. If more fish look unwell, a vet who sees fish can examine a freshly chilled body.
