Saying goodbye to a pet fish in Stockholm

Stockholm, Sweden

What happens when a pet fish dies in Stockholm

Stockholm is built across islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic, and most people in the inner city live in apartment buildings, often without a lift in the older blocks of Södermalm and Vasastan. Burying a pet at home is rarely an option here, so home collection and cremation is the usual choice. Mention stairs, entry codes and parking when you get in touch, since these affect how collection works.

Stockholm families make the most of Djurgården, the waterfront paths and the forests at the edge of the city, and many spend summers in the archipelago. Pets are often part of all of it, from the summer cottage to a sunny balcony in town. Many owners here ask for individual cremation so the ashes can come home or go to a place that mattered. Confirm the type of cremation in writing.

In a city the size of Stockholm, most people who keep fish do it in an aquarium, often in an apartment with no garden at all. That rules out the backyard burial many of us grew up with, which is one reason fish cremation questions come up more often in big cities. A sealed bag in the freezer gives you time to decide. From there, a planter burial on the balcony, a communal cremation through a vet, or a private cremation for a larger fish are all realistic.

Stockholm is home to about 975,000 people.

84.69%[1]

In 2023, 84.69% of deaths in Sweden were cremated (58 crematoria).

10 million[2]

About 10 million US households keep freshwater fish.

13%[3]

13% of UK households keep an indoor fish tank.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

What local funeral customs suggest for a pet fish

Cremation is the everyday choice in Sweden: about 84.69%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That familiarity tends to carry over to pets, and it helps fish owners too. Crematories here are used to small animals, so asking about a koi or a goldfish rarely raises an eyebrow. Where it can get awkward is the tiniest fish, and a provider that's honest about how little ash a betta leaves is worth choosing over one that simply takes your money.

The Sweden percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Stockholm, not as a count of pets.

Season by season: fish losses in Stockholm

Weather affects the people as well as the pond. In Stockholm, holiday weeks, storms and heavy snow can all slow a vet's collection run or a crematory's schedule. If a fish dies just before a long weekend, don't count on anyone picking up the phone; freeze it and call on the next working day. A frozen fish loses nothing by waiting, and you avoid paying extra for an urgent service you don't need.

Budgeting for a koi or tank fish in Stockholm

Europe has about 17.6 million[5] home aquariums, so fish owners are far from unusual. In Stockholm, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, but you can contact one directly too. The table shows published small-pet prices from several countries to give you a feel for Sweden.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Sweden: Sweden costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules worth knowing in Sweden

If you rent, your lease matters more than any law. Most tenancy agreements don't mention pet burials, but a landlord or homeowners' association can still object to a grave in a shared garden. A planter on your own balcony or patio avoids the question, as does cremation. Pond fish in a rented garden raise one more point: ask before draining or filling in a pond when you move out. The notes below cover what Sweden allows.

A checklist for Stockholm fish keepers

  1. Don't flush. Net your fish out of the water, then wrap it in a bit of paper or cotton wool.
  2. Put it in the freezer inside a sealed bag with a clear label on it.
  3. Check the tank or pond before the day is out, testing the water and looking closely at each fish left.
  4. Think about what you'd like to keep: ashes for a small urn, a token vial, a photo print or simply a place to visit.
  5. Call a crematory or your vet in Stockholm with the fish's size, and ask plainly what you'd receive.
  6. Let yourself grieve. Years of daily feeding become a habit, and losing that fish leaves a hole in your day.

Memorials that suit a fish

Stockholm's winters are long and dark, with cold snaps and snow, while summers are short and light, with long evenings. In winter a cool room gives you a little time if your pet dies at home, but keep the body away from radiators and on a blanket. Around midsummer and the July holiday weeks, when much of Sweden is on holiday, ask about timing and storage.

Questions people ask

Why does the Stockholm page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 84.69%[1] of Sweden residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Will a crematory in Stockholm collect a large koi from my home?

Some will, usually for an extra fee, but most won't net a fish from the pond. Lift the koi out yourself, wrap it in a damp towel, seal it and keep it chilled or frozen. In a city the size of Stockholm, dropping it off in a cooler is often quicker and cheaper than waiting for a collection slot.

Do pet crematoria in Sweden accept fish?

Many do, especially for larger fish such as koi. Ask for individual (private) and collective (communal) prices for the smallest weight band, and ask whether a small fish will leave anything to return. Some providers suggest collective cremation or a symbolic return for very small fish.

My fish jumped out of the tank. Could it still be alive?

Possibly, if it hasn't been out long. Many fish survive a few minutes on the floor. Slip it back into the aquarium straight away and watch the gills. If they move, keep the lights low and the water calm. If there's no movement after several minutes, the fish has probably died. Handle it with a damp cloth, fit a tight lid to protect the others and freeze the body while you decide.

Is there a fish vet in Stockholm?

Large cities are the most likely places to have aquatic or exotic-animal vets. If you're losing several fish, one can examine a freshly chilled body to look for parasites or infection. Your regular vet, a koi club or a local fish store can usually point you to someone who sees fish.

Where can I bury a fish if I live in an apartment in Stockholm?

A large planter on a balcony or windowsill works well for a small fish. Wrap it in paper, bury it in fresh compost and plant something on top. Don't bury pets in public parks or communal gardens without permission. If you'd rather not bury at all, communal cremation through a vet is a simple option.
