When a fish you love dies in Daegu

Daegu, South Korea

Getting help with a fish loss around Daegu

Many Daegu families associate their pet with one special spot: a sunny apartment window, a rooftop garden, or the green paths along the Sincheon stream and the Geumho River. A private cremation where you can attend and take the ashes home the same day is common here. If you'd rather not be present, that's fine too. Ask how the cremation is carried out and what the ashes will come back in.

Daegu sits in a basin ringed by mountains, with Palgongsan to the north and Apsan to the south, and most households live in apartment complexes spreading out from the old center. As elsewhere in Korea, burying a pet on a hillside, in a park or on apartment grounds isn't permitted, so licensed cremation is the normal route. Many facilities sit outside the city, so tell us your district and whether you'd like collection.

In a city the size of Daegu, most people who keep fish do it in an aquarium, often in an apartment with no garden at all. That rules out the backyard burial many of us grew up with, which is one reason fish cremation questions come up more often in big cities. A sealed bag in the freezer gives you time to decide. From there, a planter burial on the balcony, a communal cremation through a vet, or a private cremation for a larger fish are all realistic.

Daegu's population is around 2,461,000.

If you want to compare providers, look at Busan (55 miles), Daejeon (76 miles) and Gwangju (110 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

A fish at home in Daegu

How South Korea thinks about cremation

With about 92.43%[1] of people cremated, cremation is firmly part of local life in South Korea. Families who keep ashes at home for a parent often feel the same about a long-lived pet, and a koi that has been in the family for twenty years is no exception. If you want your fish home in a small urn beside the pond or on a shelf, you'll find plenty of people here who understand exactly why.

When the weather sets the pace in Daegu

Outdoor goodbyes for a fish depend on the weather, but they don't have to happen straight away. Many families in Daegu keep a fish frozen, or keep a larger fish's ashes indoors, until a calm, dry day for a small ceremony by the pond or in the garden. Choose a day that suits the people who loved the fish.

What fish cremation costs in Daegu

In Daegu, small-pet cremation is widely available where pet funeral services exist, and many providers offer a short farewell as part of the package. For a fish, confirm they accept aquatic pets and ask what will be returned. The table shows published small-pet prices from Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo as a guide.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for South Korea: South Korea costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

The legal side of losing a fish in South Korea

Some fish diseases are taken seriously by governments. Koi herpesvirus, for example, is reportable in a number of countries because it spreads between ponds and fisheries. If a vet suspects a notifiable disease, follow their instructions on disposal, which may mean cremation rather than burial. For everyday losses from age or water problems, the normal rules for South Korea, set out below, are all you need.

The first day after a fish dies

  1. Check whether it's really gone. A fish found on the floor after jumping can sometimes recover if the gills still move; return it to the aquarium at once.
  2. If it has died, use a damp cloth to lift it carefully; dried-out skin tears at the slightest pull.
  3. Stop the next jump: fit a tight lid, close gaps around cables and lower the water line an inch.
  4. Look for a reason. Fish jump from poor water, bullying tank mates or a sudden fright, so test the water and watch the others.
  5. Freeze your fish in a labeled bag, wrapped in cloth, and take your time over the decision.
  6. Pick a goodbye that suits its size, from a windowsill planter to a private cremation for a large arowana.

Memorials that suit a fish

Daegu is known as one of the hottest cities in Korea, because the surrounding mountains trap summer heat in the basin, and its winters are cold and dry. In July and August, a pet's body needs cooling almost at once: lay your pet on a towel, place ice packs around the belly and back, and keep the air conditioning running. In winter, a room away from floor heating works for a short while.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Daegu?

The closest communities we cover are Busan (about 55 miles), Daejeon (about 76 miles) and Gwangju (about 110 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Daegu too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Is cremation common in South Korea?

For people, yes: about 92.43%[1] of South Korea deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Daegu follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Is a fish really a pet worth cremating?

If it mattered to you, yes. Koi can live 30 to 40 years and many families have kept the same fish for decades. A goldfish can live 6 to 7 years. The time you spent feeding, watching and caring for a fish is real, and so is the grief. Choose the goodbye that fits the fish and your family.

How much ash does a fish leave after cremation?

Cremated remains usually weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, and fish tend toward the low end because they're mostly water with fine bones. A large koi might return a few ounces, enough for a small urn. A pond goldfish may leave a keepsake vial's worth. A small tank fish may leave nothing you could collect separately.

Can I put a fish's ashes in a pet columbarium near Daegu?

Often yes. Pet columbaria in several Asian cities accept small urns, and a fish's ashes need very little space. Ask about niche sizes, what photos or decorations you can place inside and the yearly fee, because many charge rent after the first year. A shared niche with another family pet is sometimes possible and can reduce the cost.

Can you actually cremate a fish in Daegu?

Yes. Many pet crematories that handle small animals will cremate a fish, and a koi or large goldfish is cremated much like any small pet. The limit is size: a betta, guppy or tetra may leave no ash that can be separated and returned. Call first, give the length and rough weight, and ask what they'd expect to give back.
