Orchard, Central
Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Orchard picture
Pet ownership in Orchard's condominiums depends on each development's by-laws, and many owners keep cats, rabbits, hamsters, birds or fish in their apartments. With no private garden and burial on public land not permitted, cremation is almost always the way forward here. Your vet or the building's management can help with the logistics of moving your pet discreetly. Some buildings have a service lift that makes this easier.
Orchard sits just a degree north of the equator, so the air is hot and heavy all year, around 31°C by day, with torrential afternoon storms in the monsoon months. There is no cool season to buy you time. Put your pet in the most air-conditioned room of the apartment, set wrapped ice packs or frozen water bottles alongside, and aim to have collection arranged before evening.
One advantage of a community the size of Orchard is that people talk. Your vet, the feed store or the person who sold you your pond fish will usually know whether anyone locally takes fish for cremation and how they treat them. Ask directly what they'd do with their own fish. A straight answer from someone who knows the area is worth more than a glossy website.
About 10,000 people live in Orchard, which makes it the 3rd-largest of the 5 Central communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Orchard are based about 3 miles away in Singapore, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
For a second opinion on price, Marina Bay (3 miles), Singapore (3 miles, a larger centre) and Sentosa (4 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Orchard routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Cremation in Singapore: a little context
With cremation chosen for roughly 81.16%[1] of deaths in Singapore, many families have already arranged one for a relative and know the questions to ask. They apply to a fish on a smaller scale. How is my fish tracked at every stage? Is it cremated alone, or alongside other pets with a divider between them? When do the ashes come back, and in what? A provider that answers all three without fuss is usually a safe choice.
The Singapore figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Season by season: fish losses in Orchard
Local weather affects fish in two ways. Heat lowers the oxygen in pond and tank water and speeds up decay, so warm-weather losses need prompt action. Cold can freeze ponds and ground alike, so a winter burial may have to wait. Your provider in Orchard will know the seasons well, so ask what they'd suggest at this time of year.

Paying for a fish's goodbye in Orchard
Pet funeral customs in parts of Asia are well developed, and small pets are included. In Tokyo, one pet memorial park lists communal and individual cremation for pets under 5 kg at JPY 14,300 and JPY 22,000[5], and a fish would fall in that band. Ask any provider near Orchard exactly what's included, such as a short ceremony or a columbarium niche.

What Central allows for a pet fish
A fish is small, but the rules around water are not. Keep any burial well away from ponds, streams and wells, and don't flush a fish, dead or alive. Invasive fish released by owners are a real problem in many regions. For burial and scattering, the rules for Central are summarised below, and your city or council may add its own.
In Singapore, most fish are kept in HDB and condo aquariums, and arowana are especially prized. With little private garden space, cremation or a planter burial is common for pets. Don't release fish into reservoirs, drains or ponds; releasing animals into the wild is an offence. Ask a pet crematorium whether it accepts fish and what it returns.
Step by step, from tank to goodbye
- Book an aquatic vet when an elderly or ill fish is obviously in distress. An anesthetic overdose, given gently, lets it slip away peacefully.
- Settle the aftercare question when you book, so there's no confusion about whether your fish goes on to a crematory from the vet or comes home with you.
- Carry it in a tub of water from its own tank or pond, keep the lid on, and add a battery-powered air pump for a longer trip.
- Decide whether you want to stay. Being present feels right to many people, but saying your goodbye at home beforehand is just as valid.
- Choose private cremation, communal cremation or a home burial and ask for the total in writing before you leave.
- Watch the remaining fish closely for a week or so, above all when infection was part of the story.
Remembering your fish in Orchard
The Orchard area is Singapore's main shopping belt, but behind the malls on streets such as Paterson, Cairnhill and Grange Road are quiet condominium towers and a few older landed homes. Most residents live in high-rise apartments with lifts, guards and visitor parking rules. When you ask about collection, mention the building's access procedures, since condominium management may need to be told in advance.

Questions people ask
Why does the Orchard page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 81.16%[1] of Singapore residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Orchard?
Usually yes. Marina Bay is about 3 miles away, Singapore is about 3 miles away and Sentosa is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Singapore to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Singapore (roughly 3 miles from Orchard) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can I bury a fish near a farm pond or well near Orchard?
Keep any burial well away from ponds, streams and wells, especially if the fish died of disease. Rain can carry anything in the soil back into water that other animals or people use. Choose a spot further up the garden, or choose cremation instead.
Can you actually cremate a fish in Orchard?
Yes. Many pet crematories that handle small animals will cremate a fish, and a koi or large goldfish is cremated much like any small pet. The limit is size: a betta, guppy or tetra may leave no ash that can be separated and returned. Call first, give the length and rough weight, and ask what they'd expect to give back.
What should I do with the other fish after one dies?
Remove the dead fish quickly, then test the water for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature. Check the filter, pump and heater. If readings are off, do a partial water change and hold off feeding for a day. Watch the others closely for a week. If more fish look unwell, a vet who sees fish can examine a freshly chilled body.
