Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Auckland picture
Auckland's climate is mild and humid, with warm summers and damp winters rather than extreme heat or cold. That usually gives you a few hours to think after a pet dies at home; keep them in a cool, dry room. Heavy clay soils and steep sections in many suburbs make garden burial harder than it looks, and a backyard grave stays behind when you sell or move out.
Many Auckland families have a garden large enough for pet burial, but soil type, slopes and council rules vary by area, and renting makes a garden grave impractical for plenty of people. Cremation with ashes returned lets you take your pet with you if you move, which is common in Auckland's housing market. Ask whether a provider offers individual cremation, and what they return with the ashes.
Prices in Auckland vary more between providers than most people expect, and a fish almost always lands in the lowest weight band. That band has a minimum charge, because running the equipment costs much the same for a four-ounce goldfish as for a ten-pound koi. Ask for a written total that includes collection, the container and any certificate, and compare two quotes before you agree.
With roughly 1,657,000 residents, Auckland is one of the New Zealand communities we cover.

Cremation, custom and the family fish in New Zealand
Cremation accounts for about 69%[1] of deaths in New Zealand, so it's familiar but not the only tradition. That mix shows up in how local families say goodbye to fish. Some cremate a koi and keep the ashes by the pond; others bury a goldfish under a new plant and never think of cremation at all. Neither is more proper. Choose the goodbye that you'll feel good about in a year's time.

When the weather sets the pace in Auckland
Whatever the season in Auckland, the freezer takes the pressure off. A fish sealed in a bag with the air pressed out, wrapped in a towel and labeled, can wait weeks or months while you find a provider that accepts fish or wait for the right day for a burial. There's no need to decide anything in the first hour.

Paying for a fish's goodbye in Auckland
Prices in Auckland follow the provider's smallest-pet rate. In New Zealand, one Auckland crematorium lists NZD 305 for individual and NZD 55 for communal cremation of a 2 to 7 kg pet[5], a useful benchmark for a fish. In Australia, RSPCA Queensland's memorial packages start from AUD 250; within 14 days[6]. Ask for the price in writing before you agree.

Burial, scattering and release rules in New Zealand
Fish aftercare touches fewer rules than a dog or horse, but a few are worth knowing. Burying on rented land needs the owner's agreement. Scattering ashes into open water can need permission from whoever manages it. And releasing live fish, or pouring out a pond, is illegal in many places because of invasive species. Here's the local picture for New Zealand.
In New Zealand, koi carp are classed as a noxious fish, so goldfish are the typical pond fish and koi ponds are rare. Never release any aquarium or pond fish into waterways. Councils set the rules on home burial, and a garden or planter burial is common for small fish. Ask any crematorium whether it accepts fish before you book.
Step by step, from tank to goodbye
- Make sure. Watch the gills and fins for a full minute. A fish lying still on the bottom can be chilled, stunned or very weak rather than gone.
- Lift your fish out with a net as soon as you're sure, so decay doesn't foul the water for the others.
- Seal it in a bag or tub, press the air out and freeze it. Chill it in the fridge instead if you want a vet to find out why it died.
- Test the water the same day. Check ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature, then keep a close eye on the fish that are left.
- Decide by size. A koi or large goldfish suits private cremation; a small tank fish often suits a burial, a planter or communal cremation.
- Call a provider and ask what they'd return for your fish's length and weight, and get the total in writing.
Memorials that suit a fish
Auckland stretches across a narrow isthmus between two harbours, and getting from the North Shore to South Auckland or out west can take a long time in traffic. Many pets live in houses with gardens, though apartments and townhouses are increasingly common in the central suburbs. When you ask for aftercare options, give your suburb so the pickup cost and the time to return ashes reflect the real distance.

Questions people ask
How do New Zealand attitudes to cremation compare?
The Spinoff, citing FDANZ 2023 Funeral Industry Trends Report (2023) puts the New Zealand human cremation rate at about 69%[1]. We show it on the Auckland page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will a crematory in Auckland collect a large koi from my home?
Some will, usually for an extra fee, but most won't net a fish from the pond. Lift the koi out yourself, wrap it in a damp towel, seal it and keep it chilled or frozen. In a city the size of Auckland, dropping it off in a cooler is often quicker and cheaper than waiting for a collection slot.
How much ash does a fish leave after cremation?
Cremated remains usually weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, and fish tend toward the low end because they're mostly water with fine bones. A large koi might return a few ounces, enough for a small urn. A pond goldfish may leave a keepsake vial's worth. A small tank fish may leave nothing you could collect separately.
How do I explain a fish's death to my child?
Use simple, true words: the fish has died, its body stopped working and it won't come back. Avoid swapping in a lookalike. Let your child help with a small goodbye, such as choosing a stone, drawing a picture or picking a plant for the spot. A first pet's death is often a child's first loss, and handling it gently helps.
What does fish cremation cost in Australia?
A survey of Australian listed prices puts individual cremation for pets up to 5 kg at a median of about AUD 412, with communal cremation starting around AUD 80. A fish always falls in the smallest band. Ask the provider what they'd expect to return, because a small aquarium fish may leave very little.
Where can I find pet loss support in Australia or New Zealand?
Griefline helps with pet loss on 1300 845 745 on weekdays. Pets and People runs a round-the-clock line, 1300 431 450 in Australia and 0800 114 421 in New Zealand, with no charge for the call[8], though counsellors it refers you to may charge. Grieving a fish is still grieving, and many callers are relieved to be taken seriously.
