Most of the decisions after a fish dies are yours to make. The exceptions are burial, scattering and anything that involves open water. Flushing is a poor idea everywhere: fish can carry parasites and bacteria, and not every drain leads to full treatment, especially during heavy rain. Here's what applies in South Holland for burial and scattering.
In the Netherlands, pet crematoria are widespread and a comparison site lists dozens of them, with a wide spread of prices. For a fish, ask for the smallest weight band and whether ashes can be returned. Many Dutch gardens sit close to ditches and canals, so bury small fish well away from the water or choose cremation.
A calm plan for a fish's aftercare
- Net your fish out gently and lay it on a soft cloth, giving yourself a moment.
- Freeze it the same day, sealed and wrapped. A frozen fish keeps for weeks, so the clock stops here.
- Work out its size: measure from nose to the fork of the tail and note the rough weight. Providers will ask.
- Tell the family, children included, plainly and truthfully. Slipping in a lookalike rarely ends well.
- Compare two options, such as private cremation with the ashes in a small urn against burying your fish beneath something newly planted.
- Book your choice and ask how your fish will be identified from drop-off to return.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Rotterdam?
Usually yes. The Hague is about 13 miles away, Utrecht is about 30 miles away and Haarlem is about 32 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Netherlands?

Will a crematory in Rotterdam collect a large koi from my home?
Some will, usually for an extra fee, but most won't net a fish from the pond. Lift the koi out yourself, wrap it in a damp towel, seal it and keep it chilled or frozen. In a city the size of Rotterdam, dropping it off in a cooler is often quicker and cheaper than waiting for a collection slot.
Is it okay to flush a dead fish?
It's better not to. Fish can carry parasites and bacteria that shouldn't reach rivers, and wastewater isn't always fully treated, especially during storms. Never flush a fish that might still be alive. Burying it in the garden or a planter, or freezing it until you arrange cremation, is kinder and safer, and children often find a small burial less upsetting than a flush.
Can you actually cremate a fish in Rotterdam?
Yes. Many pet crematories that handle small animals will cremate a fish, and a koi or large goldfish is cremated much like any small pet. The limit is size: a betta, guppy or tetra may leave no ash that can be separated and returned. Call first, give the length and rough weight, and ask what they'd expect to give back.
Can a vet put my sick fish to sleep in Rotterdam?
Yes. A vet with fish experience can end its suffering by adding an anesthetic overdose to its water, and the fish simply falls asleep. Vets advise against home methods such as freezing a live fish or flushing it. Transport it in its own water with a lid on, and raise aftercare during the same appointment, so the vet can arrange cremation or hand the body back to you for burial.
