Fish & Koi Cremation in Tokyo: what to know
Across Tokyo, many families keep garden ponds, and pond losses tend to cluster at the turn of the seasons: the first hot spell, when warm water holds less oxygen, and the spring thaw, when fish start feeding again in water full of winter waste. Testing the water the day a fish dies protects the rest of the pond.
Pond keeping and aquarium keeping lead to different goodbyes across Tokyo. A tank fish usually dies indoors, is small and suits a planter, a garden grave or a shared cremation. A pond fish may be large and old, found outside after a storm or a hot night, and it's the one families most often want cremated privately. Knowing which situation you're in narrows the choice quickly.

Cremation, custom and the family fish in Tokyo
Cremation is the norm in Tokyo, where about 99.97%[1] of people are cremated. That doesn't make it the right choice for every fish. A tiny tank fish may leave nothing you could collect, and many families here pair a communal cremation or a garden burial with a memorial that needs no ash at all: a photo print, a plant or a favorite ornament from the tank. What matters is that the goodbye fits the fish.
We take the Tokyo percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
What fish cremation costs in Tokyo
Pet funeral customs in parts of Asia are well developed, and small pets are included. In Tokyo, one pet memorial park lists communal and individual cremation for pets under 5 kg at JPY 14,300 and JPY 22,000[2], and a fish would fall in that band. Ask any provider near Tokyo exactly what's included, such as a short ceremony or a columbarium niche.
Some families in Asian cities keep a pet's ashes in a columbarium rather than at home. In Singapore, one pet columbarium lists niches from SGD 300 for the first year[3], with yearly fees after that. For a fish, a small niche can hold a keepsake urn beside a photo. Ask any provider near Tokyo whether its niches suit very small urns, and budget for the ongoing fee as well as the cremation.
| Place | Communal | Individual |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo (pet under 5 kg) | JPY 14,300 | JPY 22,000 |
| Singapore (cat under 5 kg) | SGD 160 | SGD 280 |
| Hong Kong (1–5 kg pet) | n/a | HKD 1,300 |

The legal side of losing a fish in Tokyo
You don't need a permit to have a fish cremated, but what you do with the body or the ashes can be governed by local rules. The most important one for fish keepers applies to living fish: never release a fish, or empty a pond or tank, into a creek, lake or drain. Many places restrict releasing non-native fish because they can spread disease and crowd out wildlife.
Japan is where ornamental koi, nishikigoi, were first bred, and pet funeral culture is well established, with many providers offering a short ceremony. Legally, deceased pets are treated as waste, and it's illegal to bury animals in public places such as parks. For a fish, a pet memorial service can offer individual or communal cremation for pets under 5 kg.
From the first minute to the last goodbye
- Net your fish out gently and lay it on a soft cloth, giving yourself a moment.
- Freeze it the same day, sealed and wrapped. A frozen fish keeps for weeks, so the clock stops here.
- Work out its size: a provider will want the length from nose to tail fork and an approximate weight, so take both now.
- Tell the family, children included, plainly and truthfully. Slipping in a lookalike rarely ends well.
- Compare two options, for example a private cremation with a small urn and a garden burial under a new plant.
- Book your choice and find out how they keep track of your fish from hand-over to the day it comes back.
Memorials that suit a fish
Some families in Tokyo scatter a koi's ashes around a favorite tree, under the waterfall's edge stones or in a flower bed where the fish could be seen from the house. If you'd like to use a public park or lake, check the rules first and choose a quiet, respectful spot away from paths.

Questions people ask
Can I keep a koi's ashes outdoors by the pond in Tokyo?
Yes, if the container can cope with the weather. Choose a sealed, frost-proof urn in stone, metal or glazed ceramic, or place a small inner urn inside a hollow garden ornament. Ordinary wood and unglazed pottery crack in freezing weather and fade in strong sun. Set it on a firm base away from the splash zone, and consider burying most of the ashes and keeping only a little on display.
Who can take my remaining fish if I give up the pond in Tokyo?
Ask aquarium shops, pond societies, rehoming groups and keepers you know. Some shops take fish for store credit or simply for free. Releasing them into open water is restricted in many places, however suitable it looks, because pet fish bring diseases and unbalance native wildlife.
Can I bury a fish in my garden in Tokyo?
Usually yes, on land you own, with sensible care: wrap the fish in paper or cotton and keep well away from ponds, streams and wells. Local rules can be stricter, and landlords may object. A large planter with a new plant is a good alternative.
Is it legal to flush or release a fish in Tokyo?
Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places because non-native fish can spread disease and harm native species. Flushing a dead fish isn't a good idea either, as not all wastewater is fully treated. Freeze the fish and choose a burial or cremation instead.
How many communities do you cover in Tokyo?
We currently have local fish aftercare guides for 3 communities in Tokyo, including Tokyo, Setagaya and Minato. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules for burial and scattering, and how to find a provider that accepts fish.
What's the cheapest respectful goodbye for a fish in Tokyo?
A garden or planter burial costs almost nothing and gives you a place to visit. If you'd rather not bury, ask your vet whether they include small pets in a communal cremation, usually the lowest-cost cremation available. A photo or plant memorial needs no ash at all.
