In Japan, pet funerals and cremation are common, and many families treat them much like a human funeral. Some pet crematories in Japan, where the human cremation rate is near 99.97%[1], let families attend. For a fish, an attended cremation can be brief and quiet: a few minutes to say goodbye before the chamber door closes, and sometimes the chance to wait for the ashes. Not every provider offers it for small pets, and it usually costs more, so ask whether it's possible, how long it takes and whether children are welcome.

Rules worth knowing in Japan
If you rent, your lease matters more than any law. Most tenancy agreements don't mention pet burials, but a landlord or homeowners' association can still object to a grave in a shared garden. A planter on your own balcony or patio avoids the question, as does cremation. Pond fish in a rented garden raise one more point: ask before draining or filling in a pond when you move out. Legally, deceased pets are treated as waste, and it's illegal to bury animals in public places such as parks. Step by step, from tank to goodbye
- Don't flush. Lift your fish out with a net and wrap it in paper or cotton.
- Put it in the freezer inside a sealed bag with a clear label on it.
- Check the tank or pond the same day: test the water and look over every remaining fish.
- Think about what you'd like to keep: perhaps ashes in a small urn or a token vial, a printed photo, or just somewhere you can go to remember.

Is cremation common in Japan?

Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Nara follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Yes. Many pet crematories that handle small animals will cremate a fish, and a koi or large goldfish is cremated much like any small pet. The limit is size: a betta, guppy or tetra may leave no ash that can be separated and returned. Call first, give the length and rough weight, and ask what they'd expect to give back.
Where can I bury a fish if I live in an apartment in Nara?
A large planter on a balcony or windowsill works well for a small fish. Wrap it in paper, bury it in fresh compost and plant something on top. Don't bury pets in public parks or communal gardens without permission. If you'd rather not bury at all, communal cremation through a vet is a simple option.
My fish jumped out of the tank. Could it still be alive?
Possibly, if it hasn't been out long. Many fish survive a few minutes on the floor. Slip it back into the aquarium straight away and watch the gills. If they move, keep the lights low and the water calm. If there's no movement after several minutes, the fish has probably died. Handle it with a damp cloth, fit a tight lid to protect the others and freeze the body while you decide.
