Fish & Koi Cremation in Sicily: what to know
Families across Sicily say goodbye to fish in different ways. Some cremate a long-lived koi and keep the ashes by the pond; many bury a small tank fish in the garden or in a planter; others choose communal cremation through a vet. All of them are kinder than flushing, which can carry parasites and bacteria into local water.
Prices for fish cremation in Sicily follow the smallest weight band on a provider's list, so even a tiny fish usually costs the provider's minimum for a private cremation. That's why honest providers will tell you what to expect back before you pay. For a small fish, communal cremation or a garden burial is often the more sensible choice.

How Sicily thinks about cremation
With about 38.16%[1] of people cremated, Sicily is a place where burial is still common. There may be fewer pet crematories nearby, and fewer still that advertise fish. Don't let that put you off asking. Many small-animal crematories will take a fish if you call ahead, and a sealed fish in the freezer gives you all the time you need to find one.
We take the Sicily percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
What fish cremation costs in Sicily
Prices spread widely even inside one European country. Across 31 Dutch pet crematoria, individual cremation ranged from EUR 70 to 700[2], a tenfold gap for what is often the same service. A fish sits in the smallest weight band everywhere, so near Sicily it pays to ask two providers for their lowest-band individual and collective prices, and to confirm what comes back before you choose.
Speed can cost extra. One Norwegian crematorium charges NOK 1,790 for same-day return of ashes[3], and in Sweden a return of two to four weeks is normal[4]. A fish doesn't need an express service: frozen, it can wait, and so can its ashes. When you ask a provider near Sicily for a quote, ask for the standard timescale and leave off any rush fee.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Ireland (under 2 kg) | n/a | from €150 |
| Germany (all sizes) | €85 to €205 | €165 to €375 |
| Netherlands (range across providers) | €49 to €330 | €70 to €700 |
| Norway (1–20 kg) | from NOK 1,190 | NOK 3,790 |

The legal side of losing a fish in Sicily
A fish is small, but the rules around water are not. Keep any burial well away from ponds, streams and wells, and don't flush a fish, dead or alive. Invasive fish released by owners are a real problem in many regions. For burial and scattering, the rules for Sicily are summarised below, and your city or council may add its own.
From the first minute to the last goodbye
- Don't flush. Net your fish out of the water, then wrap it in a bit of paper or cotton wool.
- Put it in the freezer in a sealed bag, clearly labeled.
- Check the tank or pond the same day: test the water and look over every remaining fish.
- Think about what you'd like to keep: ashes for a small urn, a token vial, a photo print or simply a place to visit.
- Call a crematory or your vet in Sicily, tell them how big the fish is and ask directly what would come back to you.
- Let yourself grieve. A fish you fed every day for years leaves a real gap in your routine.
Memorials that suit a fish
Many families in Sicily mark a fish's life beside the pond: a flat engraved stone at the edge, a new water lily or a marginal plant bought in its name. If you have ashes from a large koi, you can scatter a little in the garden around the pond, rather than into the water, and keep the rest in a small urn or glass keepsake.

Questions people ask
Who can take my remaining fish if I give up the pond in Sicily?
Ask aquarium shops, pond societies, rehoming groups and keepers you know. Some shops take fish for store credit or simply for free. Releasing them into open water is restricted in many places, however suitable it looks, because pet fish bring diseases and unbalance native wildlife.
How much does fish cremation cost in Sicily?
A fish nearly always falls in the smallest weight band, so expect the provider's minimum price for a small pet. Communal cremation is cheaper and returns no ashes. Home collection, urns and keepsakes add to the total. Ask for an itemized written quote, and ask what they'd return for your fish's size before paying for a private cremation.
Why do pond fish die in hot weather in Sicily?
Warm water holds less oxygen, and on hot, still nights levels drop lowest around dawn. In hot parts of Sicily, such as Sicily where summer highs average about °F, an air pump or fountain helps, and a dead fish should be removed and frozen promptly.
How long does it take to get a fish's ashes back in Sicily?
Many families receive private cremation ashes within one to two weeks. In rural areas, where small pets travel to a regional crematory on a set schedule, it can take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
Can I bury a fish in my garden in Sicily?
Usually yes, on land you own, with sensible care: wrap the fish in paper or cotton and keep well away from ponds, streams and wells. Local rules can be stricter, and landlords may object. A large planter with a new plant is a good alternative.
Can I keep a koi's ashes outdoors by the pond in Sicily?
Yes, if the container can cope with the weather. Choose a sealed, frost-proof urn in stone, metal or glazed ceramic, or place a small inner urn inside a hollow garden ornament. Ordinary wood and unglazed pottery crack in freezing weather and fade in strong sun. Set it on a firm base away from the splash zone, and consider burying most of the ashes and keeping only a little on display.
