About 76.0%[1] of people in Germany are cremated, and pet cremation is correspondingly common. For fish keepers, the practical upshot is that you're unlikely to be the first person to ask a local crematory about a koi. Many will have a clear policy: fish over a certain size cremated privately with ashes returned, very small fish offered communal cremation or a symbolic return. Ask to hear that policy before you book.

Fish aftercare touches fewer rules than a dog or horse, but a few are worth knowing. Burying on rented land needs the owner's agreement. Scattering ashes into open water can need permission from whoever manages it. And releasing live fish, or pouring out a pond, is illegal in many places because of invasive species. In Germany, home burial of a pet on your own land needs at least 50 cm of soil cover and isn't allowed in water-protection areas, which matters if your garden is near a well or stream. Koi keeping is popular, and pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking and whether fish are accepted.
The first day after a fish dies
- If your child's fish dies while they're at school, either leave the fish in place or put it somewhere cold, then be honest with them once they're home.
- Skip the secret replacement. Children usually notice, and the truth is easier to handle than a discovery later.
- Let them see the fish if they want to, wrapped in a soft cloth, and answer questions in plain words.
- Offer two or three choices for how to say goodbye: a windowsill flowerpot, a place in the garden or a little box they can hold on to.
- Set a time for the goodbye, so they can make a card, pick a stone or choose words to say.
- Leave the tank empty for a while before talking about a new fish, unless your child asks sooner.

Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Dresden follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
