Koi and aquarium fish cremation in Frankfurt

Frankfurt, Hesse

What happens when a pet fish dies in Frankfurt

In Germany it is often permitted to bury a pet in your own garden, subject to local rules such as groundwater protection zones, but the majority of Frankfurt households rent without any garden, which makes cremation the usual route. Ask whether the quote is for an individual cremation, whether collection from home is included and how the ashes are returned. If your pet was registered with the city or an insurer, remember to let them know too.

Most people in Frankfurt live in rented apartments, from the Gründerzeit buildings of Nordend and Sachsenhausen to newer blocks in the outer districts, and many get around by U-Bahn or bike. A large pet that dies on the fourth floor of a building without a lift is a genuine logistical problem. Ask your vet or a pet cremation provider about home collection, and mention the stairs and parking so they send enough help.

High-rise living in Frankfurt brings its own small hurdles. Your freezer may be too small for a big fish, and the building may not want anything buried in a shared courtyard bed. A friend with a chest freezer or your vet's clinic will often hold a fish for a few days if you ask. If shared planters are off limits, a pot on your own balcony or a communal cremation keeps the goodbye simple and avoids a row with the building manager.

Frankfurt is home to about 764,000 people, the largest of the 2 Hesse communities we cover.

For a second opinion on price, Wiesbaden (20 miles), Mainz (21 miles) and Mannheim (44 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Frankfurt routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Local attitudes to cremation

Some pet crematories in Germany, where the human cremation rate is near 76.0%[1], let families attend. For a fish, an attended cremation can be brief and quiet: a few minutes to say goodbye before the chamber door closes, and sometimes the chance to wait for the ashes. Not every provider offers it for small pets, and it usually costs more, so ask whether it's possible, how long it takes and whether children are welcome.

Source for the Germany number: Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Frankfurt, so the human figure is the best local signal available.

Season by season: fish losses in Frankfurt

Weather affects the people as well as the pond. In Frankfurt, holiday weeks, storms and heavy snow can all slow a vet's collection run or a crematory's schedule. If a fish dies just before a long weekend, don't count on anyone picking up the phone; freeze it and call on the next working day. A frozen fish loses nothing by waiting, and you avoid paying extra for an urgent service you don't need.

What fish cremation costs in Frankfurt

For a koi or large pond fish near Frankfurt, individual cremation at the small-pet rate makes sense. For small aquarium fish, many European families choose a garden burial instead, which is allowed in many countries on your own land if you follow local rules on keeping clear of water. Ask local providers for both individual and collective prices.

Local rules in Hesse

A fish is small, but the rules around water are not. Keep any burial well away from ponds, streams and wells, and don't flush a fish, dead or alive. Invasive fish released by owners are a real problem in many regions. For burial and scattering, the rules for Hesse are summarised below, and your city or council may add its own.

In Germany, home burial of a pet on your own land needs at least 50 cm of soil cover and isn't allowed in water-protection areas, which matters if your garden is near a well or stream. Koi keeping is popular, and pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking and whether fish are accepted.

Step by step, from tank to goodbye

  1. Net your fish out gently and rest it on a soft cloth while you think.
  2. Freeze it the same day, wrapped and sealed in a bag. Once frozen, a fish will keep for weeks, and there's no more rush.
  3. Work out its size: a provider will want the length from nose to tail fork and an approximate weight, so take both now.
  4. Tell the family, children included, plainly and truthfully. Slipping in a lookalike rarely ends well.
  5. Compare two options, such as private cremation with the ashes in a small urn against burying your fish beneath something newly planted.
  6. Book your choice and find out how they keep track of your fish from hand-over to the day it comes back.

Keeping your fish part of the family story

Frankfurt is one of Germany's warmer cities, and in July and August top-floor flats in the inner districts can stay hot through the night. If your pet dies then, move the body to a tiled floor or cellar storeroom, cover it with a towel over ice packs and aim to have it collected within a day. In the colder months you have more time, provided it is kept away from radiators.

Our services overview lays out every option side by side, the planning tools turn your pet's details into figures, look through our guides and the blog, or see what other families chose in the poll results. If you live between Frankfurt and Wiesbaden, either page applies. Every other community in Hesse, and all of Germany, is listed too.

Questions people ask

Why does the Frankfurt page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 76.0%[1] of Germany residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Frankfurt?

The closest communities we cover are Wiesbaden (about 20 miles), Mainz (about 21 miles) and Mannheim (about 44 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Frankfurt too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

How long can I keep a dead fish in the freezer?

Sealed in a bag with the air pressed out and wrapped in a towel, a fish keeps for weeks or even months. That gives you time to find a provider or wait for a burial day. Label the bag clearly. If you want a vet to find out why your fish died, chill it in the fridge instead and call them quickly, because freezing damages the tissue.

Can a vet put my sick fish to sleep in Frankfurt?

Yes. A vet with fish experience can end its suffering by adding an anesthetic overdose to its water, and the fish simply falls asleep. Vets advise against home methods such as freezing a live fish or flushing it. Transport it in its own water with a lid on, and raise aftercare during the same appointment, so the vet can arrange cremation or hand the body back to you for burial.

Where can I bury a fish if I live in an apartment in Frankfurt?

A large planter on a balcony or windowsill works well for a small fish. Wrap it in paper, bury it in fresh compost and plant something on top. Don't bury pets in public parks or communal gardens without permission. If you'd rather not bury at all, communal cremation through a vet is a simple option.

Can you actually cremate a fish in Frankfurt?

Yes. Many pet crematories that handle small animals will cremate a fish, and a koi or large goldfish is cremated much like any small pet. The limit is size: a betta, guppy or tetra may leave no ash that can be separated and returned. Call first, give the length and rough weight, and ask what they'd expect to give back.
