How Germany thinks about cremation
About 76.0%[1] of people in Germany are cremated, and pet cremation is correspondingly common. For fish keepers, the practical upshot is that you're unlikely to be the first person to ask a local crematory about a koi. Many will have a clear policy: fish over a certain size cremated privately with ashes returned, very small fish offered communal cremation or a symbolic return. A fish is small, but the rules around water are not. Keep any burial well away from ponds, streams and wells, and don't flush a fish, dead or alive. Invasive fish released by owners are a real problem in many regions. For burial and scattering, the rules for Bavaria are summarised below, and your city or council may add its own.
In Germany, home burial of a pet on your own land needs at least 50 cm of soil cover and isn't allowed in water-protection areas, which matters if your garden is near a well or stream. Koi keeping is popular, and pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking and whether fish are accepted.
The first day after a fish dies
- Remove the fish from the pond or tank promptly, and with no delay at all if it's warm out.
- Count your stock and look for a cause: a visiting heron, a pump that stopped, a sultry airless night or a water quality crash.
- Fix the water first: add aeration, do a partial water change if readings are off and hold off feeding for a day.
- Freeze the fish you lost, bagging and sealing them individually if separate cremations are what you'd like.
- Decide whether you want ashes back. If not, communal cremation or a burial well away from the pond is simple and kind.
- Ask for a written quote with collection, the cremation itself and the container itemized.
- Mark the loss your own way: a stone at the pond's edge, a new water plant or an entry in your log.
