How France thinks about cremation
In France, where the cremation rate is only 44.91%[1], burial customs often carry small rituals: a cloth wrapping, a few words, a marker. Those translate beautifully to a fish. Wrap it in a clean cotton handkerchief or a large garden leaf, say something about what it meant to you and set a smooth stone or shell on the spot. Children tend to remember the ritual far longer than the method.

Before you bury, scatter or rehome in Occitanie
A loss sometimes leads families to give up fish keeping altogether. If you're rehoming the fish that are left, offer them to a fish store, a club or another keeper; don't be tempted to free them in a local stream or lake, however healthy the water looks. How do France attitudes to cremation compare?
ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) puts the France human cremation rate at about 44.91%[1]. Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Montpellier?

Do pet crematoria in France accept fish?

Sealed in a bag with the air pressed out and wrapped in a towel, a fish keeps for weeks or even months. That gives you time to find a provider or wait for a burial day. Label the bag clearly. If you want a vet to find out why your fish died, chill it in the fridge instead and call them quickly, because freezing damages the tissue.
Can you actually cremate a fish in Montpellier?
