Lille, Hauts-de-France
Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Lille picture
Many Lille families associate a pet with the green spaces around the Citadelle, the banks of the Deûle or a small garden behind the house. A private cremation returns ashes you can keep or scatter later, with permission for that place. A communal cremation costs less and returns no ashes. Garden burial is another route some consider, but check local rules first.
Lille is a dense, brick-built city, with Flemish-style terraced houses, small courtyards and apartments in Vieux-Lille and the older districts, and suburbs stretching across the wider metropole towards Roubaix and Tourcoing. Many residents rely on the metro rather than a car. If your pet dies at home, collection can make things easier. Mention your district, floor and parking when you ask for options.
Home collection is common for dogs and cats in Lille, but for a fish most families simply drop it off. It keeps the cost down and it's easy: a frozen fish in a sealed bag, inside a small cooler, travels well. If your fish is a large koi and you can't lift or carry it safely, say so when you book. Some providers will collect for a fee, though few will net a fish out of the pond for you.
Lille is home to about 232,000 people.
Our pages for Reims (104 miles), Neuilly-sur-Seine (125 miles) and Paris (126 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Lille as well.

What local funeral customs suggest for a pet fish
About 44.91%[1] of people in France are cremated, well below the rates seen in some other places. Garden burial is the natural choice for most fish here, and it's a sound one if you bury deep enough and away from water. If your fish was large or very old, or you'd like ashes for a keepsake, cremation is worth the extra phone calls to find a provider that accepts aquatic pets.

Season by season: fish losses in Lille
Outdoor goodbyes for a fish depend on the weather, but they don't have to happen straight away. Many families in Lille keep a fish frozen, or keep a larger fish's ashes indoors, until a calm, dry day for a small ceremony by the pond or in the garden. Choose a day that suits the people who loved the fish.

Paying for a fish's goodbye in Lille
Prices spread widely even inside one European country. Across 31 Dutch pet crematoria, individual cremation ranged from EUR 70 to 700[5], a tenfold gap for what is often the same service. A fish sits in the smallest weight band everywhere, so near Lille it pays to ask two providers for their lowest-band individual and collective prices, and to confirm what comes back before you choose.

Before you bury, scatter or rehome in Hauts-de-France
Ashes from a fish are mostly bone mineral, and scattering them is rarely regulated on your own land. Tipping them into a pond that still holds fish can cloud the water, so many keepers scatter around the edge instead. Public lakes, rivers and parks are a different matter: the body that manages them can set its own rules. Here's what applies in Hauts-de-France.
In France, pet crematoria offer individual (incinération individuelle) and collective cremation, and your vet can usually arrange either. For a fish, ask whether they accept aquatic pets and what would be returned. Garden burial of a small pet on your own land is common; keep it well away from water sources and neighboring houses.
What to do when your fish dies in Lille
- Net your fish out gently and lay it on a soft cloth, giving yourself a moment.
- Freeze it the same day, wrapped and sealed in a bag. Once frozen, a fish will keep for weeks, and there's no more rush.
- Work out its size: measure from nose to the fork of the tail and note the rough weight. Providers will ask.
- Tell the family, including children, in simple honest words. Avoid a quiet swap for a lookalike.
- Compare two options, for example a private cremation with a small urn and a garden burial under a new plant.
- Book your choice and ask how your fish will be identified from drop-off to return.
Memorials that suit a fish
Lille has a cool, grey, often rainy climate, with mild summers and winters that bring frost and occasional snow. That cooler weather gives you a little time, but a pet's body should still be kept cool: wrap your pet in a towel, place cold packs nearby and use the coolest room. During a summer heatwave, arrange collection more quickly. Frosty mornings can also slow road travel.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lille?
Usually yes. Reims is about 104 miles away, Neuilly-sur-Seine is about 125 miles away and Paris is about 126 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do France attitudes to cremation compare?
ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) puts the France human cremation rate at about 44.91%[1]. We show it on the Lille page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is water cremation available for pets in France?
It depends on the country and even the region. Alkaline hydrolysis, sometimes called resomation, is offered for pets in parts of Europe, and a Dutch life-cycle study cited by the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance found it had far less environmental impact than flame cremation[7]. Ask providers near Lille whether they offer it and accept fish. If not, flame cremation or a garden burial are both fine choices.
What should I bring when I drop my fish off in Lille?
Bring the fish still frozen, double-bagged in an insulated box, plus your name, phone number and the fish's name. Know whether you want private or communal cremation and what container you'd like the ashes in. A photo helps staff put a face to the name. Ask for a receipt that shows an identification number, so you can check it against the paperwork when the ashes come back.
Do pet crematoria in France accept fish?
Many do, especially for larger fish such as koi. Ask for individual (private) and collective (communal) prices for the smallest weight band, and ask whether a small fish will leave anything to return. Some providers suggest collective cremation or a symbolic return for very small fish.
How long can I keep a dead fish in the freezer?
Sealed in a bag with the air pressed out and wrapped in a towel, a fish keeps for weeks or even months. That gives you time to find a provider or wait for a burial day. Label the bag clearly. If you want a vet to find out why your fish died, chill it in the fridge instead and call them quickly, because freezing damages the tissue.
