Cremation in France: a little context
Only about 44.91%[1] of people in France are cremated, so burial remains the local tradition. For fish, that usually means a small grave in the garden, which is simple and kind for most tank fish. Cremation is still available through vets and pet crematories, though, and it becomes more attractive for a large koi you'd like to keep close, or if you rent and might move.

Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places. Often there's no licence written for them at all, and any inspection covers the equipment rather than how pets are handled. That puts the questions in your hands: ask in writing how a small body is labeled from drop-off to return and whether the cremation is truly individual. In France, pet crematoria offer individual (incinération individuelle) and collective cremation, and your vet can usually arrange either. Can a vet put my sick fish to sleep in Lyon?
Yes. A vet with fish experience can end its suffering by adding an anesthetic overdose to its water, and the fish simply falls asleep. Vets advise against home methods such as freezing a live fish or flushing it. Transport it in its own water with a lid on, and raise aftercare during the same appointment, so the vet can arrange cremation or hand the body back to you for burial.
