In Brazil, where the cremation rate is only 9%[1], burial customs often carry small rituals: a cloth wrapping, a few words, a marker. Those translate beautifully to a fish. Wrap it in a clean cotton handkerchief or a large garden leaf, say something about what it meant to you and set a smooth stone or shell on the spot. - If it has died, pick it up gently with a damp cloth, since the skin tears easily once dry.
- Stop the next jump: fit a tight lid, close gaps around cables and lower the water line an inch.
- Look for a reason. Fish jump from poor water, bullying tank mates or a sudden fright, so test the water and watch the others.
- Freeze your fish in a labeled bag, wrapped in cloth, and take your time over the decision.
- Pick a goodbye that suits its size, whether that's a planter on the windowsill or private cremation for a big arowana.

Why does the Sao Paulo page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Exame, citing Sincep (2024) reports about 9%[1] of Brazil residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How long can I keep a dead fish in the freezer?
Sealed in a bag with the air pressed out and wrapped in a towel, a fish keeps for weeks or even months. That gives you time to find a provider or wait for a burial day. Label the bag clearly. If you want a vet to find out why your fish died, chill it in the fridge instead and call them quickly, because freezing damages the tissue.
Is it okay to flush a dead fish?
It's better not to. Fish can carry parasites and bacteria that shouldn't reach rivers, and wastewater isn't always fully treated, especially during storms. Never flush a fish that might still be alive. Burying it in the garden or a planter, or freezing it until you arrange cremation, is kinder and safer, and children often find a small burial less upsetting than a flush.
Is a fish really a pet worth cremating?
If it mattered to you, yes. Koi can live 30 to 40 years and many families have kept the same fish for decades. A goldfish can live 6 to 7 years. The time you spent feeding, watching and caring for a fish is real, and so is the grief. Choose the goodbye that fits the fish and your family.
Where can I bury a fish if I live in an apartment in Sao Paulo?
A large planter on a balcony or windowsill works well for a small fish. Wrap it in paper, bury it in fresh compost and plant something on top. Don't bury pets in public parks or communal gardens without permission. If you'd rather not bury at all, communal cremation through a vet is a simple option.
What if no one near Sao Paulo will cremate a fish?
