Brasilia, Federal District
Who to call first in Brasilia when a fish dies
Brasilia was planned around cars, with wide axes, residential superblocks of apartment buildings on stilts and satellite towns spread across the Federal District. That layout matters when a pet dies: distances are long, and many families in the superblocks have no garden for a home burial. When you ask for options, say whether you live in the Plano Piloto or a satellite city, and whether your building has a lift, so any collection can be planned properly.
The capital sits high on Brazil's central plateau, with a long dry season from roughly May to September when humidity drops very low and days stay warm. Heat still speeds things up, so keep your pet's body cool with ice packs wrapped in a towel and a shaded, ventilated room. From October the rains return with heavy afternoon storms, which can slow travel across the district, so arrange collection early in the day if you can.
Large metros are where you're most likely to find an aquatic or exotic-animal vet, and that matters when more than one fish is dying. If a koi or several tank fish die within a few days in Brasilia, chill the most recent one in the fridge rather than freezing it and call a fish vet the same day. A post-mortem can reveal a parasite or bacterial problem before it reaches the rest of your stock.
With roughly 3,055,000 residents, Brasilia is one of the Federal District communities we cover.

Cremation habits in Brazil, and what they mean for a fish
About 9%[1] of people in Brazil are cremated, well below the rates seen in some other places. Garden burial is the natural choice for most fish here, and it's a sound one if you bury deep enough and away from water. If your fish was large or very old, or you'd like ashes for a keepsake, cremation is worth the extra phone calls to find a provider that accepts aquatic pets.

What the seasons mean for fish in Brasilia
Weather affects the people as well as the pond. In Brasilia, holiday weeks, storms and heavy snow can all slow a vet's collection run or a crematory's schedule. If a fish dies just before a long weekend, don't count on anyone picking up the phone; freeze it and call on the next working day. A frozen fish loses nothing by waiting, and you avoid paying extra for an urgent service you don't need.

Why a small fish still has a minimum price
In some countries, burial of animals isn't allowed at all; in the UAE, for example, Dubai Municipality doesn't permit animal burials[5]. Where that's so, a fish in Brasilia can go for municipal disposal or be cremated, either with other pets or on its own. Shared cremation of a pet under 5 kg runs AED 700 to 900 in the UAE[6], which gives a sense of how small-pet prices can sit higher outside Europe and North America.

Before you bury, scatter or rehome in Federal District
Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places. Often there's no licence written for them at all, and any inspection covers the equipment rather than how pets are handled. That puts the questions in your hands: ask in writing how a small body is labeled from drop-off to return and whether the cremation is truly individual. Rules on burial and scattering in Federal District follow.
Step by step, from tank to goodbye
- Remove the fish from the pond or tank promptly, especially in warm weather.
- Count your stock and look for a cause: a heron, a pump failure, a hot still night or a sudden water problem.
- Fix the water first: get more air into it, change part of the water if your test readings are wrong and skip feeding for a day.
- Freeze the fish you lost, each one in its own sealed bag if you want them cremated separately.
- Decide whether you want ashes back. When you don't, a communal cremation or a burial at a good distance from the pond is a simple, kind choice.
- Ask for a written quote with collection, the cremation itself and the container itemized.
- Mark the loss your own way: a stone at the pond's edge, a new water plant or an entry in your log.
Memorials that suit a fish
Families here often want a quiet goodbye that fits a busy week in government offices and commutes from the satellite towns. A private cremation with ashes returned lets you choose the moment later: some people keep them at home, others take them to a favorite green spot, such as the edge of Lake Paranoa or the cerrado land around the city. Ask any provider what a private cremation includes before you agree to it.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Brazil?
For people, yes: about 9%[1] of Brazil deaths end in cremation, according to Exame, citing Sincep (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Brasilia follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is it okay to flush a dead fish?
It's better not to. Fish can carry parasites and bacteria that shouldn't reach rivers, and wastewater isn't always fully treated, especially during storms. Never flush a fish that might still be alive. Burying it in the garden or a planter, or freezing it until you arrange cremation, is kinder and safer, and children often find a small burial less upsetting than a flush.
Is a fish really a pet worth cremating?
If it mattered to you, yes. Koi can live 30 to 40 years and many families have kept the same fish for decades. A goldfish can live 6 to 7 years. The time you spent feeding, watching and caring for a fish is real, and so is the grief. Choose the goodbye that fits the fish and your family.
How do I explain a fish's death to my child?
Use simple, true words: the fish has died, its body stopped working and it won't come back. Avoid swapping in a lookalike. Let your child help with a small goodbye, such as choosing a stone, drawing a picture or picking a plant for the spot. A first pet's death is often a child's first loss, and handling it gently helps.
Can a vet put my sick fish to sleep in Brasilia?
Yes. A vet with fish experience can end its suffering by adding an anesthetic overdose to its water, and the fish simply falls asleep. Vets advise against home methods such as freezing a live fish or flushing it. Transport it in its own water with a lid on, and raise aftercare during the same appointment, so the vet can arrange cremation or hand the body back to you for burial.
Will a crematory in Brasilia collect a large koi from my home?
Some will, usually for an extra fee, but most won't net a fish from the pond. Lift the koi out yourself, wrap it in a damp towel, seal it and keep it chilled or frozen. In a city the size of Brasilia, dropping it off in a cooler is often quicker and cheaper than waiting for a collection slot.
