When a fish you love dies in Antwerp

Antwerp, Flanders

Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Antwerp picture

Antwerp's mild, often grey weather means a death at home seldom forces a hurried decision. Lay your pet somewhere cool, on a blanket, away from radiators and sunny windows, and on a warm day add wrapped cold packs. That leaves time for a partner or children to come home and say goodbye, and to ring your vet, who can explain local options and whether they offer cremation through the practice.

Most aftercare in Antwerp is arranged in Dutch, though many providers are comfortable in English and French, and the city's large international community means that is often needed. Ask for the quote in your preferred language so nothing gets lost. Check whether the cremation is individual, so only your pet's ashes come back, or communal, and whether collection and an urn are included.

Antwerp has plenty of pet crematories, but not all of them take fish, and a few quietly decline very small ones because there is nothing to hand back. Save time by giving the length and rough weight of your fish on the first call and asking one plain question: what would you expect to return? A provider used to aquatic pets will answer straight away. If they hesitate, move on to the next.

Antwerp is home to about 523,000 people, the largest of the 2 Flanders communities we cover.

Families in Antwerp often end up using a provider from Brussels (26 miles, a larger centre) and Ghent (32 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Local attitudes to cremation

Cremation now covers some 67.98%[1] of deaths in Belgium, and that steady rise has gone hand in hand with pets being treated as family. Fish are part of the shift. Koi typically live 30-40 years[5], according to the Japan Nishikigoi Promotion Association, so a pond fish can outlast a mortgage and watch children grow up. Choosing a proper cremation for a fish like that is no stranger than doing it for a dog.

Antwerp weather, ponds and timing

Weather affects the people as well as the pond. In Antwerp, holiday weeks, storms and heavy snow can all slow a vet's collection run or a crematory's schedule. If a fish dies just before a long weekend, don't count on anyone picking up the phone; freeze it and call on the next working day. A frozen fish loses nothing by waiting, and you avoid paying extra for an urgent service you don't need.

Budgeting for a koi or tank fish in Antwerp

Across Europe, small-pet cremation prices vary by country but follow the same logic: collective cremation costs less than individual, and a fish always falls in the lowest weight band. In Ireland, one crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 / EUR 250[6] for pets under 2 kg and up to 10 kg respectively. Ask any provider near Antwerp what they'd return for your fish's size.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Flanders: Flanders costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules worth knowing in Flanders

Most of the decisions after a fish dies are yours to make. The exceptions are burial, scattering and anything that involves open water. Flushing is a poor idea everywhere: fish can carry parasites and bacteria, and not every drain leads to full treatment, especially during heavy rain. Here's what applies in Flanders for burial and scattering.

What to do when your fish dies in Antwerp

  1. Don't flush. Lift your fish out with a net and wrap it in paper or cotton.
  2. Put it in the freezer inside a sealed bag with a clear label on it.
  3. Check the tank or pond before the day is out, testing the water and looking closely at each fish left.
  4. Think about what you'd like to keep: ashes for a small urn, a token vial, a photo print or simply a place to visit.
  5. Call a crematory or your vet in Antwerp with the fish's size, and ask plainly what you'd receive.
  6. Let yourself grieve. A fish you fed every day for years leaves a real gap in your routine.

Remembering your fish in Antwerp

Antwerp is compact and busy, with narrow townhouses in Zurenborg and Borgerhout, converted warehouses on Het Eilandje and apartment blocks across Berchem and Linkeroever. Plenty of residents cycle or take the tram and do not own a car, so having a pet collected from home is often the practical route. Give the provider your floor, whether the building has a lift, and whether a van can stop outside on a busy street.

The services page is the place to compare what is included, or see what other families chose in the poll results, browse in-depth guides or recent articles, try the free planning tools. If you live between Antwerp and Ghent, either page applies. Every other community in Flanders, and all of Belgium, is listed too.

Questions people ask

How do Belgium attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Belgium human cremation rate at about 67.98%[1]. We show it on the Antwerp page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Antwerp?

Usually yes. Brussels is about 26 miles away and Ghent is about 32 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will a crematory in Antwerp collect a large koi from my home?

Some will, usually for an extra fee, but most won't net a fish from the pond. Lift the koi out yourself, wrap it in a damp towel, seal it and keep it chilled or frozen. In a city the size of Antwerp, dropping it off in a cooler is often quicker and cheaper than waiting for a collection slot.

What can I keep if my fish was too small to leave ashes?

Plenty. A framed photo, a painting or print of the fish, its favorite tank ornament, a plant grown over a garden burial or a painted stone all work. Some crematories offer a token vial with a certificate, though the contents may be mostly from the chamber. Ask what's inside before you pay, and choose whatever feels like your fish.

Is water cremation available for pets in Belgium?

It depends on the country and even the region. Alkaline hydrolysis, sometimes called resomation, is offered for pets in parts of Europe, and a Dutch life-cycle study cited by the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance found it had far less environmental impact than flame cremation[8]. Ask providers near Antwerp whether they offer it and accept fish. If not, flame cremation or a garden burial are both fine choices.

Is a fish really a pet worth cremating?

If it mattered to you, yes. Koi can live 30 to 40 years and many families have kept the same fish for decades. A goldfish can live 6 to 7 years. The time you spent feeding, watching and caring for a fish is real, and so is the grief. Choose the goodbye that fits the fish and your family.
