How Australia thinks about cremation
About 71%[2] of people in Australia are cremated, and pet cremation is correspondingly common. For fish keepers, the practical upshot is that you're unlikely to be the first person to ask a local crematory about a koi. Many will have a clear policy: fish over a certain size cremated privately with ashes returned, very small fish offered communal cremation or a symbolic return. Ask to hear that policy before you book.

Before you bury, scatter or rehome in Victoria
Most of the decisions after a fish dies are yours to make. The exceptions are burial, scattering and anything that involves open water. Flushing is a poor idea everywhere: fish can carry parasites and bacteria, and not every drain leads to full treatment, especially during heavy rain. How do I explain a fish's death to my child?
Use simple, true words: the fish has died, its body stopped working and it won't come back. Avoid swapping in a lookalike. Let your child help with a small goodbye, such as choosing a stone, drawing a picture or picking a plant for the spot. A first pet's death is often a child's first loss, and handling it gently helps.
My fish jumped out of the tank. Could it still be alive?
Possibly, if it hasn't been out long. Many fish survive a few minutes on the floor. Slip it back into the aquarium straight away and watch the gills. If they move, keep the lights low and the water calm. If there's no movement after several minutes, the fish has probably died. Handle it with a damp cloth, fit a tight lid to protect the others and freeze the body while you decide.
