Cremation habits in Australia, and what they mean for a fish
With about 71%[2] of people cremated, cremation is firmly part of local life in Australia. Families who keep ashes at home for a parent often feel the same about a long-lived pet, and a koi that has been in the family for twenty years is no exception. If you want your fish home in a small urn beside the pond or on a shelf, you'll find plenty of people here who understand exactly why.
The Australia figure comes from FuneralSmart (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Timing a fish's aftercare in Dubbo's climate
Weather affects the people as well as the pond. In Dubbo, holiday weeks, storms and heavy snow can all slow a vet's collection run or a crematory's schedule. The legal side of losing a fish in New South Wales
Some fish diseases are taken seriously by governments. Koi herpesvirus, for example, is reportable in a number of countries because it spreads between ponds and fisheries. If a vet suspects a notifiable disease, follow their instructions on disposal, which may mean cremation rather than burial. For everyday losses from age or water problems, the normal rules for New South Wales, set out below, are all you need.
In Australia, koi are a form of common carp, which is a declared pest in parts of the country, and Queensland restricts keeping them at all. Goldfish and other aquarium fish should never be released into waterways. Summer heat makes the freezer essential after a fish dies, and many councils limit backyard burials in suburban areas.

- Freeze the fish you lost, bagging and sealing them individually if separate cremations are what you'd like.
